So the standoff is clearly about them wishing to have him sign an addendum to cover social media and he’s refusing to do so and rightly so.

What no doubt complicates matters is that the agreement is likely between the BBC and his limited company which means the BBC has no influence on him full stop. He is simply the “individual” provided by his company to provide services to the BBC.

Unless this article is wrong, as reported, his use of social media is restricted specifically in relation to impartiality and Tim Davie sets that out quite clearly.

It wouldn’t be the first time wording in a new contract isn’t updated just because their was a plan to do so.

RE: Gary Lineker/BBC Asylum Controversy - CF1 - 11-03-2023

It is saddening watching this debacle play out. Why the BBC presses "self destruct" every few months / years is beyond me.

Lineker will no doubt call it a day with the BBC in the next 24 hours and go to ITV.

Smug Tim Davie will continue as Director General until there's an "internal BBC inquiry" over the whole affair and he'll step down in 2024 / 2025.

All of this was not necessary. The stupidity at the BBC is beyond parallel. Not one ounce of common sense at the BBC for what is meant to be a national / international broadcaster.

I wonder if any of them will be unable to attend work tomorrow?

I imagine a lot of staff can edit a package, if the staff involved with Gary don’t want to they can find alternatives.
Agreed, it might be edited by the wider Sports department if needed.

One difference I'd expect is the duration. Currently iPlayer still lists it as being 80 minutes long. I imagine at the very least it'll be reduced to 60 minutes, possibly shorter.

I wonder if they'll be tempted to fill Saturday night with a repeat of MOTD Top 10, if nothing else due to it featuring Lineker. Sunday morning should be easy to fill, as they'd simply show Breakfast on BBC One for longer.

Would the radio commentators be happy for their work to be aired in replacement of commentators effectively on strike.
I'm not sure every match is commentated on for radio. 5 Live have at least one live match on a Saturday and the local stations all do commentary of local matches, but a lot of those won't be Premier League.

Radio commentary, particularly the style used for local radio style wouldn't be that suitable for TV highlight use anyway

RE: Gary Lineker/BBC Asylum Controversy - Rdd - 11-03-2023

Presumably there’s an ability to resort to the PLP highlights show if all else failed? It would be unusual for people expecting MOTD though.

RE: Gary Lineker/BBC Asylum Controversy - Brekkie - 11-03-2023

I assume nowadays PLP handle all the match production and camera work - it's pretty standard now for the broadcaster to literally just be the broadcaster. Therefore should cameramen and technicians down tools too as match production is via PLP nothing would be affected.

Fair to say though this really is a Mess of the Day. When the BBC is the story you know they've well and truly screwed up. I would be expecting resignations at board level next week - and if not by those behind by this move hopefully by those (assuming there are any decent folk left running the BBC) who oppose it.

None of this is going to end well for anyone...

2 BBC News notifications on the subject so far this morning. One linking to a summery piece by the media editor and another stating “the BBC has undermined its own credibility former DG Greg Dyke says”……
