RE: Gary Lineker/BBC Asylum Controversy - JMT1985 - 13-12-2023

I was watching ITV News at Ten, and they reported on this, and they said a statement which is not true, they called Gary Lineker the highest paid star at the BBC - that is wrong.

Graham Norton is the highest paid star at the BBC - Graham is never mentioned now in the BBC annual salary list, because his salary is not paid directly to him, but to his production company So Television. But it is still licence fee money being used to fund his salary.

From accounts filed to Companies House by his production company So Television, we see that Graham was paid £3.025 million by his company. That money came from the BBC so he is in effect the highest paid star at the BBC.

And he does not work for the BBC News division.

Both true, but he does work for the BBC as a big name; he is on their list of those held to a higher standard. In return for the greater restrictions and scrutiny these people have, they do get higher salaries.

Because he works for the BBC, there is a link - BBC News is also a BBC brand, after all.

So Television is owned by ITV Studios, its not been his company since 2012ish; they make more things than The Graham Norton Show. The BBC pay them as an independent producer and buy certain rights in the same way they do any other independent commissions. SOTV will bear costs of production including all staffing.

Graham's renumeration will be for many things other than just as a presenter, so it's just not comparable to the Lineker situation, and entirely false to claim otherwise.

It’s become very tedious that each time he expresses his view that it’s made into news again. I never remember him being controversial when he played football or first started in broadcasting, time to go Gary

He should definitely quit because the press is making a mountain out of a molehill.

He responded to their public ad-hominen criticism of him. Isn't the right of reply a key part of balance?

I'd suggest that your issue is with the people tediously watching his every tweet for a sniff of controversy to write about for clicks.

As to your second point, was social media around when he was playing football or at the start of his broadcasting career?

Unfortunately these days it counts as journalism. The rags have been known to go on Reddit and make news stories out of posts by normal people, so celebrities have no chance of tweeting anything without it being reported. This comes with the job and GL is fully aware of this every-time he tweets as are other celebs. That’s why they should be responsible. I remember the old days where someone just focused on their industry and specialism. When it was innocent, now everyone has to have a cause. Don’t be surprised if they make this thread a story!

I’m very skeptical of such things we had cases like below:

I have to ask why are they paying him so much?

It's not Gary making it into news though. It suits certain quarters to attack the poster rather than address the issue and use it to deflect attention away from the political matter and onto attacking the BBC and it's talent.
