CBBC DOG in 4:3 this afternoon, although SUBS graphic is in 16:9.

Really bothers me how there's an unnecessarily large gap in the SUBS graphic.

That looks a mess - and the Subs graphic style looks as though it belongs with the previous graphics set, not the new one.

Why do they even bother with a Subs tag these days, isn’t every programme on BBC channels now subtitled?

It's a part of the Ofcom guidelines.

"1.22  Publicity: the word ‘Subtitles’ should be displayed legibly on the screen at the start of the programme."

Someone tell Channel 4, who I don't think have had a subtitles indicator for the last 20 years.

RE: New CBBC/CBeebies Presentation - VMPhil - 20-03-2023

Well they're "just" guidelines. But clearly the BBC are following them.

BBC also has a 100% subtitle requirement for all its channels (BBC Parliament excepted, though a good chunk of it actually is subtitled). So the subtitles tag is pretty much redundant as far as the BBC is concerned. But if they want to keep doing it, well its been a traditional part of the ident for the last few decades or so so....

Pretty sure CBeebies doesn't plonk a subtitles tag at the start of its programming either, though can't be sure if this is promoted in other ways.

It was all triggered by a technical need that TC9 doing CBBC was routed
via an unstaffed network control room …the schedule was in TC9 ..
But Otis the aardvark could hold up a piece of cardboard with 888/subtitles on it.

So I persuaded the representatives of the d/Deaf communities and others interested
That it was even better that the programme presenter (!) was mentioning
Subtitles and that it would alway be in a larger font than the top right 888 …
And with digital tv we wanted to say “Subtitles”
Hence the legibility clause in the ITC /OFCOM Guidelines…

100% quota can never be achieved but 99.98% is…

Exactly, it doesn’t need to be there any more if subtitles are already the default, in my view.

It’s just clutter on screen.
