When we talk about closedowns, how about this one from Granada in 1985, with the always calm Charles Foster, on the night of the Hollywood Wives incident, where Central apparently missed out a reel, resulting in an early finish, and causing everyone else to pad out the time, to meet the quota for adverts v programme time. Thames showed it intact the next night.

It’s a great clip. I really hate to nitpick, but Thames had in fact shown Hollywood Wives the night before because on this night Thames had their Telethon. But as you say part of the reel was ‘lost’ somewhere between Thames and Central.

It would be interesting to see how the rest of the network handled the early end to Hollywood Wives! Was it the final part that was missing or a different reel? If the final part, I imagine screens around the network suddenly cutting to black, or if this coincided with a commercial break, an apology following the ads.

TSW had to pad out their closedown routine as well, though they also had a Postscript epilogue to play out (cc. Neil Miles)

Interesting that neither TSW nor Granada (from what I’ve seen) offered any apology or explanation for the abrupt end to Hollywood Wives. The closest TSW comes to acknowledging the cock-up is to apologise that their epilogue is being shown earlier.

According to the Liverpool Echo (31st October 1985), viewers were confused by a character’s sudden change of hairstyle but were unaware that part of the action had been skipped. Granada was said to have received just six complaints. This probably explains why no on-air apology was made in each of the regions we’ve seen. Why draw attention to an error if – at least initially - it appeared that viewers hadn’t noticed.

Another sign-off from Nederland 1 (now NPO1) from the Netherlands, this time, the one used between 2000 and 2003, developed by Red Bee Media.

Interestingly, the sting package for that station at the period has it's own sculpture, travelling across the country, some were used digitally.

Here's one from the Soviet Union. Not sure when, or if there was a continuity announcement beforehand, but they did end the day with their national anthem. And a wake up alarm telling you to SWITCH OFF YOUR SET

The uploader does have some suspicions of it being a recreation, feels somewhat like it just might be with some inconsistencies but overall it's still very good. Here's another one from the same era:
