Mickey's not the only trademarked to the hilt character, Tarzan fell into the public domain years ago but the name Tarzan is trademarked by the ERB estate so you cannot make anything Tarzan related without going through the estate, even the iconic cry is trademarked.

I wonder if people are thinking they can get away with it because someone got away with making a Winnie The Pooh slasher movie- which has been referred to a lot over in reference to Steamboat Willie going public domain. I think people forget that Disney don't own Winnie The Pooh, it was around a good 40 years before Disney made any cartoons, and said movie doesn't use anything specific to the Disney portrayals.
What also isn't mentioned is Steamboat Willie isn't the only Mickey cartoon in the public domain- so are Plane Crazy and The Galloping Gaucho- albeit only the silent versions of those two (as they were originally made that way, with sound added for a release the following year), the sound versions won't be until next year (along with another 13 Mickey cartoons).

Yeah, Tarzan is represented in the first Kingdom Hearts video game, but it can't be used in any sequels because Disney's rights lapsed - they can now only release existing content.

It's more surprising that we haven't seen newer adaptations of Pooh but I suspect the Disney version is so strong in people's mind that a new adaptation would be seen as inferior.
I've seen the poster and trailer for the Mickey slasher and there are a lot of elements which would fall under both copyright and trademark infringement, the face of Mickey in the poster is similar to the one in the colour cartoons logos which are still under copyright.

I think Pooh is so heavily assosiated with Disney nobody would even try! Especially as most people think of the Disney version and the things specific to their that any other adaptation wouldn't be able to use. As I've said, I think many people forget Pooh isn't owned by Disney... which likely has a lot to do with said slasher film being mentioned so much the last few days and people using it as an example of what could be done with Mickey Mouse when it's actually a very different situation.

The difference with John Oliver is that's clearly a joke and Disney don't generally sue parodies.
