RE: C4 Programme Commissioning Woes - XIII - 18-08-2023

People used to get hot and bothered about Channel 5 scheduling but yet Channel 4 does the same and no one bats an eyelid.

Yep.

Not to mention Popmaster isn't exactly established on TV as Countdown is (which can get away with having a primetime version having been in daytime for ages- that is 8 out of 10 Cats), and seemed to be created to practically capitalise on the Greatest Hits Radio publicity (hence why Ian Katz wanted to give it the big slot).

If they had aired it in daytime to start with like Countdown started with, it may have started to get an audience.

Also, 12 Yard/ITV produce the show, but don't have as much control as The Hit List producers do, due to not owning the format.

Should note Channel 4 had a change to listings tonight. The scheduled film "The Darkest Minds" was pulled and replaced with "Ad Astra".

Reading the synopsis of The Darkest Minds, a particular part of the plot ("a contagious disease kills nearly 90 percent of all children and teenagers") would have probably been seen as insensitive due to certain news events of the day.

People complain about Channel 4 dumping shows but Channel 5 get criticised for it more because the latter's older audience is more likely to complain and the shows in question are generally higher profile. There's also the issue that because someone with a public profile is namechecked in complaints and there are those who are quick to defend them (which is not surprising given how people act), it makes certain criticism stand out/not stand out.

As for Popmaster, I think there is some panic scheduling going on with it but equally C4 not wasting a brand new show when viewers around at that time would prefer to watch other stuff is understandable. For what Popmaster is and its prize (which is bound to get laughed at), it's not the greatest idea in the world but much of what has been commissioned for C4 lately has failed.

PopmasterTV - just seemed to be created to practically capitalise on the publicity around Ken Bruce defecting to GHR, and the fact he was able to get a TV version made, as the BBC weren't interested.

Then rushed to transmission quickly (think Eldorado) rather than waiting a few months to work the teething issues, and giving the show a primetime slot when it had yet to establish itself in the game show arena (shows like The Weakest Link, Countdown, Eggheads, Pointless, The Chase, etc, had to start from daytime first beforehand before making the progression into primetime slots)

Not even Terry Wogan got a primetime slot with his Perfect Recall game show (he went out at 5pm) when he was on C4.

RE: C4 Programme Commissioning Woes - Brekkie - 20-08-2023

It surprises me C4 have never seriously looked to establish their own equivalent of "Quizzy Mondays" with a couple of half hour formats back to back scheduled for a good chunk of the year. The genre certainly suffers from everything having to be an hour now - C4 do have a second series of One Question being filmed which was a better show than the title suggested but a stretch to call it a hit.

But Popmaster ended up doing pretty well for More4 in the end though it's likely if it's gets a second series that it will be weekly as the first episode and the final got the highest ratings.

Ad Astra was originally scheduled for Saturday evening, and so they replaced that with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Ian Katz at the Edinburgh TV Festival today;

Shows not being renewed is the natural cycle.
Defends Rise and Fall as it picked up a 20% share of young viewers.
15 of C4's current most watched 25 shows are new.
