Rise and Fall probably had to have a lengthy run to justify the cost.

Youngest Media the company who made Moneybags went out of business so that may have something do with it not being recommissioned but the second series was stupidly scheduled against Pointless and The Chase.

Yeah, and I think that timeslot killed it.

Sounds like Naked Attraction and Scared of the Dark have been put on the scrap heap.

Looks like the source is an article in the Mail on Sunday & it seems to suggest that Naked Attraction is being rested. Apparently they’re going to film a series in December, so I guess they’re just skipping the run that was about to enter pre production…

The debate over privatisation has been obviously a distraction, both from day to day business and the more pertinent issue of C4's reliance on advertising revenue which has now come to the fore.

Whilst I understand the politics behind it, I do think making Channel 4 split operations between London and Leeds with creative hubs in Bristol & Glasgow has added cost and complexity.

C4 at its best is a lean and agile PSB rival to the BBC. I wonder if the latest financial pressures may prompt C4 to sell its London HQ?

It seems to be a cash flow issue rather than balance sheet issue so selling assets might not be the solution it seems to be - indeed the costs then incurred of relocating further might make the situation worse - although they could do as many companies have and sell it to lease back the building.

Decreasing rental costs would probably be more beneficial short term - presumably their Glasgow and Bristol properties, and perhaps even Leeds, are leased rather than bought.

I don’t know much about the economics of making reality TV, but that article states Rise & Fall cost £14 million. That seems like a lot of money?

I am guessing this is the reason why shows like The Circle & The Traitors split the production cost across the UK and US versions? If so, is this just a bad business decision by C4 to have not secured a deal like this and just suck up the cost of Rise & Fall themselves?

RE: C4 Programme Commissioning Woes - Brekkie - 11-06-2023

For 18 hours of higher end reality TV it's probably at the top end at around £800k an hour.  Toast TV pit their top advertising rate at around £20k per 30 seconds, so that would be running at a loss.   Reality TV may be deemed cheaper and now pick up audiences later on streaming but it's not very repeatable on linear.

Shows like Naked Attraction cant cost a lot to make though... They probably film 2-3 episodes a day so would only need a studio for what a week?
