And in the case of Packed Lunch whereever it came from they'd be a filming space required.

C4 also had a location in Manchester already where 4Sales are based.

The 2022 annual report should be due soon which will give us a clearer picture of the direction of travel (although it may not be until the 2023 report current woes are truly reflected) - the 2021 report was released in July last year and the 2020 report in June, so it should be imminent.

Last year everything was rosey - how quickly things can change:

Quote:Financial Performance
In 2021, Channel 4’s corporation revenues exceeded £1 billion for the first time, growing by 25% year-on-year to £1.2 billion. This is also a significant increase of 18% on 2019’s pre-pandemic revenues.
A pre-tax surplus of £101 million broke 2020’s previous record figure of £74 million, significantly increasing the organisation’s net cash reserves to £272 million and net assets to £556 million and providing Channel 4 with a platform for future strategic growth and long-term investment.
Nearly one-fifth (19%) of total corporation revenues came from digital advertising, an increase of +40% year on year, demonstrating that the broadcaster’s Future4 strategy is on track to hit its 30% digital advertising revenue target by 2025.
The success of the Future4 strategy was reinforced by All 4, which delivered a record +21% growth in streaming views to more than 1.5bn views in 2021. All 4 is the UK’s biggest free streaming service and delivered 13% of total Channel 4 viewing.
Record investment in British content
Channel 4 spent £671m on content in 2021. This is the broadcaster’s third-highest content spend ever and an increase on 2020 (+29%, 2020: £522m) and pre-pandemic levels.
£492m was spent on originated content (+33%, 2020: £370m) in total. 55% of main channel content was made in the Nations and Regions, Channel 4’s highest level ever and achieving its 50% target two years ahead of schedule.
By the end of 2021, Channel 4 had around 400 roles based outside of London, across its bases in Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol and Manchester, and this number is expected to grow further in 2022.
In 2022, Channel 4 will continue to reinvest in the delivery of its remit and supporting independent producers across the UK. Channel 4 is on track to spend over £700m in content, the highest level in its 40-year history.

RE: C4 Programme Commissioning Woes - UTVLifer - 12-06-2023

At this rate it feels like we’ll soon be seeing a headline titled ‘Channel 4 AXES Channel 4’

A few more woes. Firstly a record low share for C4 last month at 4.48%, but also a record high for C4 Streaming at "50 billion minutes", a figure which is practically useless to interpret.

Another new show axed with The Big Blow Out not getting a second run on E4. Perhaps more indicative of it's woes is the axing of House of the Year - shown under the Grand Designs brand for many years. Must admit though creatively I found the last series was essentially showing us versions of things we'd seen over the year.

And Ian Katz sent out an email yesterday addressing the recent issues, though many are calling for his head.

RE: C4 Programme Commissioning Woes - gottago - 16-06-2023

Apparently the House of the Year show was axed in January and isn't related to the recent cull. By the sounds of what you said it had probably reached the end of its shelf life anyway.

And now the Big Narstie Show is gone but again it's claimed this before the recent cull too.

You have to wonder if a lot of indies will call for a shakeup at Channel 4 because it badly needs it.

Not a huge surprise given Mo has gone on to bigger things and it's one of the last shows commissioned for 11pm.

They already are. I think even before recent woes the execs weren't too popular. There was a bit of unrest a few years back when Expectation started getting quite a few commissions, many of which flopped.

RE: C4 Programme Commissioning Woes - tellyblues - 16-06-2023

What type of shows are people expecting/wanting Channel 4 to commission?

RE: C4 Programme Commissioning Woes - JMT1985 - 16-06-2023

I am dreading looking at this thread now to see what else Channel 4 will axe - what next? Steph's Packed Lunch gone? People had written that show off in it's first week on air in 2020, but now in 2023 it's still there, is it doing well?

I really hope they leave Steph's Packed Lunch alone. I caught the end of one episode this week and forgot how playful the team are with each other, such as Steph and Simon Rimmer ribbing each other while they make burgers together. I know some people have written it off as just another daytime show, but it's a refreshing change to see that dynamic after other shows are determined to present themselves as a "happy family".
