Coverage of "major incident" in Nottingham city centre - LDN - 13-06-2023

Since shortly before 0630, large parts of Nottingham city centre have been closed due to "ongoing major police incidents":

Nottinghamshire Police itself confirmed an "ongoing serious incident" just before 0800.

As far I could see, there was no mention of this on any of the major UK news outlets until some time later. GMB broke the news at 0824:

I believe Sky broke the news at 0830, referring to the Notts Police tweet on air:

At the same time as that was going out on GMB, BBC News stuck with a seemingly interminable three-minute promo for Morning Live, before going to local news. Breakfast finally broke the news after returning at the 0830 BOTH.

Note the welcome reappearance of the double-line lower-thirds for breaking news, with scrolling/flipping additional info.

What seems remarkable is that we're now well over two hours into a major incident that has effectively shut down a UK city centre... and still no-one seems to have the slightest idea what's going on.

And with nothing else to report apart from "there's an incident", broadcasters have (understandably!) returned to coverage of other stories, rather than sticking with rolling coverage of the Nottingham situation.

GB News with footage supposedly shot by an eyewitness of an arrest (with the eyewitness DTL via phone) at the moment.

BBC News sticking with Nicky Campbell talking about COVID inquiry whilst a major incident is taking place in a major UK city! At least Sky News are leading with it - poor from the BBC!

Great scoop for them if that's all true.

The emergency service response and the silence for over 3hrs now is worrying.

Sounds like another argument in favour of extending Breakfast until 10am weekdays, so that the News channel can simulcast that instead of 5Live. (Then may the 10-11am hour of the BBC News could be branded 'UK Today', with a deliberate focus towards UK news.)

Of course broadcasters may know what is going on, but have been asked not to report until later when the stage of the operation is completed.

Really solid coverage on Sky News so far -- they'd been dipping in and out of the story during the 0830 half-hour, but at 0900, they went into rolling coverage.

Good summaries of what (little) we know so far, along with footage from a local news provider, and reporting from a local radio journalist.

Sky has also done well explaining things like what NILOs are (National Inter-agency Liaison Officers), after several social media images surfaced showing large groups of these officers near the police cordon. (A detailed explanation of NILOs can be found here: https://files.manchesterarenainquiry.org.uk/live/uploads/2021/02/09201013/INQ004559_3-4.pdf  for those interested.)

Meanwhile, over on BBC News -- give me strength -- Nicky Campbell wants to know what you think about the Covid Inquiry:

No breaking news lower-thirds, and of course, the ticker/flipper showed absolutely nothing except the contact details for the radio phone-in.

There was a ten-second mention of the Nottingham incident in the news summary at 0901...

...but if you missed that, and you tuned into BBC News after 0902, you'd have no absolutely no idea there was any kind of serious situation ongoing in Nottingham. For ten minutes, there was nothing else happening in the entire world, as far as BBC News was concerned, except the sharing of vacuous, ill-informed public opinions of the Covid Inquiry.

Thankfully, someone finally saw sense at 0912, enabling the BREAKING ticker with the headline "Police say a serious incident has happened in Nottingham"...

...which sounds like it was written by a moron.

Well if that's the case, GB News didn't listen to that advice, having an eyewitness on.

If the public have been advised to avoid the area for now then presumably the press have been told to do so too so there perhaps isn't too much to report on until further updates from the police
