Yeah I meant to add Harry Hill jumped on that on TV Burp when he was schedule ahead of X Factor. Like most of TV Burp, it became a running joke.

It was apparently because LWT complained that Thames used to schedule stuff that gave them a poor audience for 7pm. Starting at 5:15 allowed them to start the evening how they wanted. And so instead of the dull stuff Thames put out at 6pm they had The Six o Clock show which was a big hit and set the tone for the weekend.

6oCS was the actual start of the weekend for those of us in London at the time

When LWT handed over to Thames Weekend News, during the 6 o clock show, or as a standalone programme, was there an on screen glitch or not?

There shouldn't have been any more than for taking Corrie from Granada.

I really don't know where to post this question, given that I am not able to find a thread for generic satellite questions (maybe if the moderators know where it is, I hope that they move my post there instead), but I have found something weird. https://www.lyngsat.com/muxes/Telstar-12-Vantage_North-Sea_11043-V.html  This is from lyngsat.com and shows a satellite mux with all of the BBC's TV and Radio channels, however it's on a satellite called Telstar 12 Vantage at 15.0°W. I am quite puzzled about why the BBC channels are located encrypted in this satellite, also in the rest of the satellite there are muxes for a Chilean TV package for the Voice of America, TV Luiza, something called EXRN Radio Network, a channel called BFBS Navy and finally an encrypted ESPN mux, as I said it's a really weird place to have BBC channels so who are they aimed at? Why are they there?

There are examples on YouTube of glitches like those, but again they all look worse than it actually was. If you see a messy splat on a handover on a YouTube video that's a limitation of the technology where the VCR has effectively freaked out for three seconds trying to figure out what the frig's just happened and what to resync to, but of course the tape doesn't stop in the meantime...

On your telly in real time? You probably wouldn't have noticed much if anything.

Surely the Thames Weekend News would have been routed through the 6 O-Clock Show studio and synced up? So there should have been no glitch.

The one give away is that the BBC one is "NE"
This is the Satelite back up of PSB 1 mux ..... https://www.digitalbitrate.com/dtv.php?mux=BBCB-PSB3&liste=2&live=35&lang=en

In simple terms each Main transmitter (now 100 or so) is fed by dual diversely routed Fibre
(expect in Scotland were there are some microwave links)
but they also have a satelite reciever to pick up this feed to provide coverage if the telco circuits fail.
and the (Slightly tweaked to select SD or HD ) Transport stream,
is fed directly from the Reciever to the Modulators at the transmitter without any decoding.
As there are lots of regional variations of BBC one the feed that is needed is selected in Coding and Mux
in this case NE - as when the Bilsdale mast caught fire a large number of smaller transmitters were set up taking this feed
to get BBC services including All HD back on air very quickly.
https://www.freeview.co.uk/help/channel-information-bilsdale-temporary-mast-eston-nab-arncliffe-wood

(this idea was proposed by one of the Tenderers for DSO as a way of getting round any issues with ReBroadcast Links failing during switch over .....and there a a very few permenant instalations to cover an RBL)

D3&4 now -after Bilsdale- can do something similar

Edit as Steve says the Back up mux used was Intelsat 901 https://www.lyngsat.com/Intelsat-901.html
So this may be a BFBS feed

Isn't that the backup Freeview distribution? Although I suspect the information is out of date as it's back to generic BBC One after the replacement Bilsdale went live. And I thought it was on Intelsat 901, so something is strange.

I wonder if that allegation ever borne out - certainly before the handover was bought forward, Thames were evidently using the Friday 6.30pm slot for shows like Thames Sport (moved to Thursdays after 1982) and Looks Familiar.

Notably, the Six O'Clock Show's success in London seemed to lead to other regions trying similar Friday night formats for a while.

Granada had 'Weekend' for a while with Paul Jones off Manfred Mann, Central News enticed Chris Tarrant back to do Fridays (he later did a stint on 6oCS itself), TSW had 'The Friday Show' with Kenneth MacLeod and I'm pretty sure even Tyne Tees did a similar thing.

Much later on, Border tried turning Lookaround on Fridays into a 'weekend starts here' format - and that was not too long before the merger with Tyne Tees, as well.
