The Technologist confirmed that it is the satellite backup Freeview distribution, funnily enough, also checking on lyngsat.com, it shows that the backup is still available on Intelsat 901 as well, so weirdly they have now put it in another satellite at the same time, this makes everything even more weird

From experience:

Lyngsat has a tendency of being outdated now and again, it's good for international coverage and one of the oldest resources on the internet.

KingOfSat tends to be more up-to-date, but focuses on Europe.

Digital Bitrate is the best as the site constantly monitors DTT, Satellite, and Cable, but coverage is more limited to compared to the other two.

No as it was an outside source into the studio. The Thames News studio appeared on the monitor next to Michael Aspel and he and Andrew Gardner sometimes had a bit of banter at the end of the bulletin.

This is the Satelite back up of PSB 1 mux .....

The other clue is the presence of 5 Select, which is on PSB3.

Presumably if they're moving satellites Arqiva are having to move the dish at each transmitter site to 15w. I imagine that will take some time so there will probably be some overlap between the two.


I notice Lyngsat says it's on the North Sea beam of the satellite. Intelsat 901 has a massive footprint and the satelite reserve was used by British emigrants in Spain and Portugal to watch UK TV channels. I suspect that might be the case much longer

It seems like they are moving the backup feed to a different satellite with a tighter focus on the UK. Quite possibly as a result of the number of unofficial decoders available in places like Spain and sold to ex-pats

I imagine that's one advantage that Telstar 12 Vantage offers, but the main factor for changing is almost certainly cost.

Indeed, and synchronised to the studio in the Lines area.

And just to add, incoming circuits to building were referred to as 'circuits' so KRS this or that. The lines area assigned these circuits (and synchronised them where appropriate) to be remotes into the central distribution system so REM 1 or Rem this, that or the other. Remotes were then assigned to a studio as a 'DX' so DX 1 or this, that or the other.

Theoretically. I understand that the encryption isn't too challenging to overcome.

Presumably there is a period of running both services in parallel until dishes have realigned and receivers retuned at the TX sites.

Yes, but the original BISS isn't that secure, it's possible to get the keys from the signal (somehow, I don't know how) which is why newer more secure versions have been developed for more sensitive uses.

There are companies that sell decoders and encryption codes to people in Spain and Portugal. It's not that reliable of course as they change the encryption every so often and the suppliers have to send out USB sticks or codes for the receivers. Aquick bit of googling brings up guides for British emigrants on how to receive it, for example.....

However searching for how to watch UK TV in Spain mostly gives the solution of accessing iPlayer, ITVX etc via a VPN which these days is probably a better solution for most.
