RE: Gladiators re-revival - tellyblues - 06-11-2023

Survivor seems to be the type of show that viewers didn't want and it's not something you can dip in and out of easily whereas you can with Gladiators, but the latter has to match up to the original otherwise it will be seen as a flop. Survivor doesn't have that problem even if it is a reboot because the majority of people don't remember the ITV run. Though it is questionable if they want to watch an ultra physical gameshow when so many have failed in recent years but maybe part of the reason is because they've been compared so much to Gladiators?

The point about timeslot is a good one, but sadly, too many shows are on far too late for what they are, e.g. Pointless and Chase celebs. I suppose it's because they are the best of what's available. Then there's also a lack of suitable comedy and drama pre-watershed which forces teatime at best shows into that primetime gap.

RE: Gladiators re-revival - Larry the Loafer - 06-11-2023

Assuming the reboot will be as faithful to the 90s series as possible, it's certainly more suited to a Saturday evening than Survivor. I haven't really watched much of the latter, but it seems to be a heavily edited reality competition with an emphasis on drama. Gladiators, whilst the competition itself was taken seriously, was a lot more fun and lighthearted, felt like a live event full of energy, and was just as appealing to a 6 year-old as it was to a 60 year-old. I don't think the performance of Survivor should be of any concern to those involved with Gladiators.

First brief promo just aired in the last break on BBC One.

Basically ten seconds long revealing the logo with the theme tune. Said 'Coming Soon' on the bottom.

You'd think January then but based on how early The Traitors promos airdmed it could be June.

That sounds exactly like the original. Smile

Very, very happy to hear they're (seemingly) keeping the original theme, considering Sky were apparently prohibited by LWT from using the original costume designs during the Legends Return special or whatever it was called. One can only hope they've kept the same music for the games!

I suspect like most of these things Sky just didn't want to pay any more than they absolutely had to for the format in 2008, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if they bought it straight from America and repackaged it themselves, rather than jumping through ITV loopholes...

That being said, there was a soundtrack of some sorts from Gladiators released, so they'd done a Millionaire long before Millionaire, in releasing the bulk of the original music, so much like when F1 coverage moved around the terrestrial networks, The Chain followed with it (Sky didn't use The Chain, and have never used it AFAIK), being a commercial piece of music (and covered as it probably was at the time by the BBC's music blanket).

Music can be expensive to clear and it can be cheaper just to ask somebody to create something similar to the original but just different enough to be unique. Or maybe the BBC have bought the original tracks. The graphics will be new, doubtless, but, well time will tell.

ITV never used The Chain.

Sky did use it, albeit only in a trail - they were supposedly going to use it from 2019 but ended up in a bidding war for the rights with C4, with the ultimate effect that neither broadcaster had it when the season actually began.

There was some evidence that the 2019 Sky F1 title sequence was changed late in the day.

With regard to the 'original' soundtrack - aside from the CD releases, Muff Murfin who produced and created it all had had the master tapes degrade over time to the point of being unusable, or had demanded ridiculous fees for their commercial use to help him fund his local radio endeavours (depending on which rumour you chose to believe). By sheer coincidence the Gladiators podcast Gladpod had an interview with him recently where amongst other things he mentioned he had the entire original score fully digitised and was keen to start sharing it. Whether some BBC/Hungry Bear money oiled the vault door I don't know, but it does key in with what I was hearing about the presentation - namely, that they were trying to something a bit like the LWT shows, but for a modern audience.
