When it comes to the fastest loser qualifying from the Eliminator do they take the time that contender ran it in or if they started 1-2 seconds behind would their time be from when the round starts?

RE: Gladiators re-revival - Neil Jones - 22-01-2024

When they put timing graphics on the Eliminator (first series only) it seemed to be the case that if you won despite being two seconds behind in starting, that was your time.

I suppose the idea was that even if you were the victim of bad luck in your games and your opponent had like a three day head start, they could in theory make a total hash of the Eliminator course or fall off every obstacle going and you could breeze through it and win.

Gladiators adds another 2 million after +7 days.

There seems to be surprise elsewhere about how well Gladiators has performed, mostly because it's a reboot of an old format. I think when you look at Saturday night TV in the last twenty years, there have been too many shows that have been just one thing, quiz shows where they stall for time and you wish they would just get on with it, whereas Gladiators is a lot of things, goes in fast and the Eliminator is a proper, exciting climax that doesn't simply repeat an earlier round.

In the 90s there was more experimentation and variety in gameshows and maybe bigger budgets helped play a part in that but perhaps it could still be the case if so much money wasn't allocated to fancy sets, prize money etc.

It's daft to suggest that shows should look drab and offer no prizes. There needs to be an incentive to watch the show and get people to apply.

And I totally get that but I wasn't suggesting that show creators don't think about visual aspects or that no prize money should be given away at all.

The show must be doing well, it's relevant enough to get these types of stories.

I timed it, it was 1 second between whistles.

And related, here's the time in the first series where the Eliminator (in the old format, they changed it the following year) was literally a dead heat:

Apparently the top scoring winners made the semi-finals in the first series, so both of the contenders made that because of the dead heat (they changed that as well). As it turned out neither of them went on to win the show.
