Are the BBC using a new version?

I think it's the same one, just enhanced with a few sound effects.

The Eliminator soundtrack had lyrics as well back in the day, but they used an instrumental version on the show:

I can only presume this was intended for the accompanying soundtrack which they put out on CD at the time, as I can't see where else it would have gone if the intention all along was to have John Sachs commentating!

No, it's definitely a new recording, though mostly the same as ITV's. Listen to the bit just before the BBC version's logo appears. It's not there in ITV's version.

The themes are very similar but the vocal in the original is more booming and pronounced and the new one more strained.

If it's a new recording by the same artist, they're now 32 years older, which possibly explains that?

RE: Gladiators re-revival - tellyblues - 25-01-2024

Or maybe it's the production and the vocal has been pushed back in the mix or altered somehow to give the new sound effects prominence?

The theme is sung by Storm (not the gladiator Tongue ) and the guy in the music video and who is singing that version is Phil Bates.

Quote:I was also involved in singing the THEME from THE GLADIATORS , a successful TV series, in this period. Of course, things are never simple with Bates. The song was written supposedly especially for me by Muff Murfin and one of his American cohorts, but when I came to record the track, it didn't exactly sound wonderful. The demo vocal, done by a small, bald, fat American session singer, sounded bloody great, but they couldn't use him in the video because he didn't look the part. So basically, they used his version on most of the broadcasts in the UK , although I occasionally heard my version being used and always cringed at my vocal performance. The album went Gold, though. Of course, this had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it contained about 10 rock classics from the likes of Queen, Free and many more ………

The CD does indeed have The Eliminator music with the lyrics - though it's a shame they're there as it also features clean game music in glorious CD quality.

I know there's a version on YouTube with voice removal applied - does the clean version of The Eliminator music actually exist anywhere?

It was used in a mash-up in a video poster earlier in the thread (when somebody put the old Eliminator music over the modern course).

I found the theme on YouTube years ago which was subsequently taken down by the copyright bots but I think I downloaded it and a bunch of other stuff (including some variations of the other music beds from the original show but I can't remember if those came from the CD). I'll have a look through my files and see if I kept the Eliminator theme after I had to replace my NAS drive due to, well running out of space basically Smile Watch this space.

This blew my mind when I first found out about it a couple of years ago. It's pretty awful. The awkwardness of it all makes it sound like they just made it up as they recorded it. 😆

I used to listen (watch?) those uploads every now and then and really enjoyed it. The music was great. I was sad when they were all removed from YouTube. I was tempted to buy the soundtrack off ebay so I could rip them but I never got around to it (and didn't care quite enough to spend the money, to be honest.)

As far as I know from quickly browsing ebay, the event tracks were on three albums - 1992's "Gladiators", 1993's "Return of the Gladiators", and 1998's "Gladiators '98". None of the cases specify which version of the Eliminator is on them though. I'm not sure if there were any other releases.
There was a release in 1996 called "Gladiators: The Boys Are Back in Town", which featured two versions of the song you can probably imagine from the title, along with "Raw Muscle" and "Tussle With The Muscle" from the ending credits.
