RE: CNN - W. Knight - 26-07-2023

An interesting article on the Licht/Zucker/Zaslav relations by Variety: Zucker's suspected moves to snatch CNN with Saudi capital, Licht's low popularity within the network, and the possible biases of those who spoke for and against him:

Even without all the Zucker/Zaslav drama, this quote sums up best why the overall strategy to move back to the centre was doomed from the start -- if ratings were deemed important.
Quote:“It’s incredibly challenging in the current media environment to be a down-the-middle network,” says Katie Couric, a CNN alum during the network’s early days who also worked with Zucker at “Today” and on her titular syndicated talk show. “As the slices of the pie get smaller and smaller, it’s more important than ever to have an engaged audience that may be more interested in affirmation than information. I think that’s why there’s so much commentary on cable. It would take a truly brilliant programmer to figure out how CNN could once again become a town square with different perspectives on important, complex issues. And even then, I’m not convinced people would even want to watch that in this hyper-partisan world. It’s a huge conundrum.”

Kaitlan Collins is standing in for Jake Tapper on The Lead today. First time I’ve seen her presenting the programme.

RE: CNN - oscillon - 27-07-2023

CNNI just performed quite a silly thing during the 5pm ET hour (which is TSR this week, as Jake is off). It was earlier in the day billed on lower thirds to have "Exclusive interview with Israel PM", which is of significant relevance to the international audience.

Unsurprisingly, first 25 minutes it was rumbling about Trump exploits and their legal consequences - panel of four, no less.
At 25 minutes past the hour they finally started airing the interview - and right after the first part of it International feed went to World Sport! Thus they ditched not only more US-specific DTL with WH correspondent (talking about possible Biden-Netanyahu meeting), but the second part of the interview as well!

What a disregard for international viewers - they could have just shifted the World Sport half-an-hour back or forth, for it to overlap with much less relevant Trump panel - or just rearrange the 5pm hour, putting the exclusive interview first. They will most likely repeat it in the next hour and throughout the day, of course - but it seems sloppy to bill it on-air to be at 5pm and then show only one half of it on CNNI at said hour while giving priority to the Trump panel.

More charges for Donald Trump so I'm expecting a ripping up of normal shows again and you'll probably won't be seeing the rest of the Netanyahu interview now.

Also this is the second time that Trump has been charged whilst Jake Tapper has been on scheduled leave, wonder if he is being dragged back to Washington to present?

RE: CNN - bilky asko - 28-07-2023

What's the record for split-screens on CNN? I've seen 8, but this was a mere 7-box piece of breaking news during The Situation Room - though two were of two people, for a total of 9.

Erin Burnett Out Front started well though. She introduced the programme, paused for a few seconds, and started again. Tonight will be a night of nights.

Yes, appears to be first for her, although she already covered Jake/Dana on SOTU.

It is still not another indictment (which could arrive at any time, so it is interesting what are the plans regarding Jake Tapper on leave), more of an update to already existing one, so for now program branding and anchoring remain in place, but it is all rolling Trump coverage.

It looked like she was expecting the program title to be shown, like after the headlines.

Christine Romans has just announced at the end of Early Start that she is leaving CNN after 23 years; this was her final CNN show.

Surely this paves the way for Bianca and Max's Newsroom slot to be expanded to two hours (like it has done on occasion) rather than find someone else to take over what is a very early slot from NYC?

Hmmm, despite is being the first domestic broadcast of the day, many people tune in across the states and especially on the East Coast. It would be a shame if Early Start was axed from the schedules.
