RE: CNN - Omnipresent - 23-08-2023

Former BBC Director General Mark Thompson is said to be in the running to lead CNN:

https://www.semafor.com/article/08/23/2023/cnn-considers-former-new-york-times-ceo-for-top-job

Quote:The former New York Times and BBC chief Mark Thompson is a leading candidate to lead CNN, according to people familiar with the conversations on both sides of the Atlantic.

Thompson, who left the Times in 2020 after 8 years, is among a group of candidates in the mix for the job, three people familiar with the recruiting process told Semafor.

Since the firing of CNN Chairman Chris Licht in June, CNN has been led by a triumvirate of veteran network leaders as it struggles for a place in a partisan U.S. cable news environment increasingly dominated by MSNBC and Fox News.

What’s the read on Thompson? Does he have an admirable tenure at the BBC or should this be a worrying sign?

RE: CNN - mixchris - 24-08-2023

I can't access CNN anymore now I don't have Sky. Can't seem to find an app on my Amazon TV to access the live channel feed. Looking at the screenshots / videos, they're not that much of an improvement on the last lot. It bugs me how graphics seem to getting bigger on some channels now with squashed text for general reporting or literally having the headline then a strap underneath.

Personally, I thought the best graphics CNNI had were this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWP5-XwZX_Q

No matter where you were in the world and no matter what hotel, if anything happened, you went to your room, switched on CNNI and got the news as it breaked. That clip from World News is the CNNI that people trusted and could count on. Half an hour, several different global stories. Even the headlines gave us more in a couple of minutes back then than we get in four hours now. Such a pity! I miss CNNI.

He ran the New York Times pretty well in terms of growing it and having it profit. There was once talk of the paper going under during the late 00's early '10's. Some of that might have been the interest of the Trump stuff, but he also increased international subscribers as well.  He might not be able to run it content wise the same way as the New York Times, but maybe he'll be good. I'll be careful before thinking anything though.

It's criminal how short the 2006 package was used. Arguably the the best CNN International has ever had.

Also, I do miss having Hala on my screen.

"Half an hour, several different global stories"

Reminds me of what you get on Al Jazeera English today!

RE: CNN - Newsroom - 24-08-2023

No idea why CNN feel the need to put CNN This Morning on an hour early purely in anticipation of what might happen. Absolute unwatchable is the hour 5-6am EST.

RE: CNN - TMD_24 - 24-08-2023

A 24 hour stream of CNN is coming to the Max streaming platform and is going to be called CNN Max. They will simulcast content from Domestic, International and four hours of exclusive CNN Max live content.
