RE: CNN - ginnyfan - 22-11-2023

In November 2006 the new version of the set made its debut. I remember hating this SO MUCH. The loss of newsroom was hard to accept. They built a wall and it stayed there until the end.....

Anyway, looking back, this set was used nicely, with a huge variety of different shots and a lot of creativity. They certainly used every inch of this limited space, something that all news channels could learn from these days. London and HK followed with a similar, if not the same, set up, but both looked worse and unfinished.

I get what they were going for, with the colour coding and matching their on screen graphics but even with Atlanta it always felt like there was something missing and that someone's original vision was not fully developed.

Do we know if Techwood is getting two studios or just one? The space Rosemary in looks like it could fit a small set.

The desk they are using is from CNN en Espanol. They probably dumped all that before the move to Mexico City. But you can clearly see the main newsroom definitely has a backoffice feel. Its certainly not mean to be on air. At least not the way CNN does things. So it is safe to assume this wont have a newsroom backdrop or appear on air at least from a set persepective. There may be DTL. Having said that the main CNN Center newsroom didnt even have DTL flashcam and it was clearly camera-ready.

I liked this set , this whole era of CNN International was very nice, didn't like how they changed it after. The coloring here is nice without being too garish, it's not often you see white a studio color.  I liked how the colors blue, yellow, red, were put in to match the CNN I color coding  the graphics and flipper had.  What came after was a disappointment, slightly, especially with OG International Desk when it was trying to be like the Situation Room, but in a cramped space, you can see it more.  I think it looked bigger here because of the use of the white coloring  versus later where it felt darker and smaller.

RE: CNN - ginnyfan - 22-11-2023

The clean, bright look of 2006 did not last long. Less than 2 years later, in April 2008, for some reason, they removed all the coloured panels and details from the studio and started using a dire, dark blue CNN logo background, everywhere. They also added blue lights under the newswall.

It was a slow transition to what was to come in 2009, with a new set , graphics and a line up of new, branded shows and names.

RE: CNN - Charles - 23-11-2023

I always liked the 2006 set. Yes, I missed the newsroom backdrop, but I really thought that clean look was ahead of its time. It reminded me of a Mondrian painting. It was different from anything seen elsewhere on CNN at that time and certainly different from anything on any other American outlet.

Looking back, I always wished they could have combined the video wall and newsroom concepts, much like the MSNBC Studio 3A which debuted the following year by the same designer and had a number of similarities.

I also think they learned with those 2006 sets how hard it is to light sets properly that use so much white, though that has since gotten a little easier with LED lighting and HD cameras. I think that was part of the reason why they dumped that look so quickly in favor of something very blue and safe. (That, plus the radical management and programming changes at the time.)

Oh, and one more thing: those 2008 election graphics were sharp. Those were the best CNN has ever had in my opinion.

RE: CNN - interestednovice - 23-11-2023

I agree, in fact all the graphics take up less space and look cleaner that what we have now - despite the move to HD and generally larger screens.

It does make you wonder how great a properly uncluttered graphics refresh could look.

Also, I agree with the sentiment from a few posts back; we do like to keep it casual in the CNN thread and I think that’s nice - I just hope I’m not guilty of the aforementioned excessive pedantry in other threads! Then again, I admit I’m a pres fan and most “normal” people would probably think we are all mad and petty to notice things such as graphics tweaks at all!

The main CNN Center newsroom absolutely did have a camera.  Then it got removed at some point… but it was there for a bit.  Like circa 2010-2011 or so is when it was there.  Don’t remember when it got removed.

And then around the corner from that newsroom was EPIC, where they shot Backstory.  That camera also eventually was removed.

RE: CNN - EastCoast - 23-11-2023

Happy Thanksgiving to the American forum members.

Looks like CNN Max has the day off are fully simulcasting CNNi.

On CNNi Max Foster anchored an extended hour at 0800 ET. Julia Chatterly is currently in the anchor chair for Connect the World. At 1100 Richard Quest replaces State of the Race. At 1300 Isa Soares replaces Amanpour.

Over on Domestic, no changes until 1600 where News Central is on for an extra hour. At 1700 it’s The Situation Room. At 2000 it’s the source until 2300.

Max Foster also did Early Start instead of Kasie Hunt today.
Interesting that they scrapped Amanpour - Christiane herself is in London and thus should not be affected by Thanksgiving holidays.
However, it seems the arrangement now is that both Thursday and Friday editions are done from New York by Bianna Golodryga to allow Christiane to make her Saturday show.

IIRC, usually on Thanksgiving, all live programming after 4pm is gone until midnight.
Obviously, due to recent develompents in Israel-Hamas war this plan was scrapped, so that is why we see this arrangement with three-hour blocks from Israel in the evening.

RE: CNN - TMD_24 - 23-11-2023

The Situation Room is also 5pm-8pm ET on Friday as well which I don't think was the case a few days ago.
