RE: CNN - TMD_24 - 06-02-2024

Noticed during the advert breaks that there are new 'coming up' and 'now watching' idents for all the shows and different music.

It includes the statement
50 member team! I know there are a number of people behind the scenes but I'm actually surprised by that number considering it's 3 hours of weekday programming. I don't think there were that many at Sky for their breakfast show when they did Sky News Raw.

I’m not surprised. NY show teams are beyond bloated. I guess because primetime and morning programming have been considered extra important??

Atlanta show teams don’t have nearly as many people. I suppose that’s part of the cost savings here.

You don’t have to pay people as much in Atlanta. And you can probably cut 20 positions in the process (at least!).

And does that 50-person team include the studio and control room staff? Perhaps not. Those jobs are also going away.

These are pretty significant layoffs.

And I’m sure Mark Thompson isn’t done yet.

Well 50 is probably too many for a population of 67 million as opposed to 331 million and only about the size of California. But then factor into sifting thru video and stories from over 1700 tv affiliates that are constantly incoming overnight and across the day. Then covering the irritating nuances of US Politics to the minutia to which its covered. Then global stories. Its probably going to require a larger team. Not saying 50 isnt alot. But it doesnt surprise me frankly.

That was my favorite part of the day in the 90s during school breaks when I could stay home to watch TV. Daybreak part 1, Business Morning, Daybreak part 2, Business Day, Daybreak part 3, then CNN Morning News, which I always thought was cool because they sat in front of the news desk and allowed you to see more of the production side. Then in the mid to late 90s a new, reformatted 2 hour Business Day started, followed by Early Edition. That first Early Edition was pretty revolutionary for CNN Center because it was live from the heart of the newsroom, you could see all the live satellite feeds and staff behind the anchors, they went around the newsroom and showcased it plus it was also the launch of their Hong Kong newsroom and live programming from their new CNN Center in Asia. Pretty cool!

RE: CNN - Charles - 06-02-2024

Count me in as another one who's perplexed by the ascension of Kasie Hunt. She is just so awkward on camera and always has been even when she did the same o'dark-thirty hour on MSNBC. I bet she might do better if she were paired up with an affable co-anchor, but who would that be in DC? Plus, if cost-cutting is the end-all-be-all, then three hours of Kasie Hunt solo in a cupboard studio is what we'll get, I guess.

Also, what no better example of how terrible this industry is when you think that CNN just laid off an entire Atlanta-based morning team just one year ago when Morning Express was canceled? I guess that was still the Licht era, so they were still really trying to make CNN This Morning work. Hopefully some of those ex-Morning Express writers and producers who are still in Atlanta and want to get re-hired will be able to do so.

RE: CNN - interestednovice - 06-02-2024

Morning Express ended right before CNN This Morning started. I imagine Licht was looking for a way to make sure CNN This Morning’s ratings compared favourably with New Day’s, so in an attempt to juice the ratings while simultaneously cutting costs, he cancelled Morning Express without any regard for what made it a success. Then stuck a simulcast of CNN This Morning in it’s place on HLN, hoping that viewers would stay and provide an on-paper ratings boost for CNN.

At least Zucker appeared to appreciate what was special about HLN’s morning output, as he spared Morning Express & Weekend Express during a previous round of cuts (which brutally scaled back the rest of HLN, including cancelling shows from longtime anchors who had only moved across from CNN relatively recently).

It probably didn’t help that CNN This Morning, in it’s initial format at least, was likely more costly to produce that New Day had been - so to fund the extra expense, HLN was thrown under the bus. Or that’s how it appeared to me, at least.

I love the new balcony sofa (and pillows Big Grin ) used at the end of Newsroom. Finally some variety in London studio.

Such a shame this reshufle wasn't used to extend Newsroom to 2 hours. Its content is tailored for US audiences anyway.

Bianca was caught off guard last week and pictured wearing comfortable slippers during that closing shot.

RE: CNN - conrad73 - 08-02-2024

CNN have gone all out today with their use of the Washington Set.

Am not too familiar with which bit is what, but it looks as vast as it does on Election night. Jake Tapper and team (Kasie Hunt, Laura Coates, Jamie Gagnel and some two others) are at the half circular desk, which is now mounted. There is also a section of another familiar desk being used for interviews and there is another desk near the 'Washington' sign we usually see during the Situation Room.

Caitlin Collins is sat on a chair outside the Supreme Court, not sure who with yet.

Coates, Hunt, Gagnel, and two others are also at the half circular desk.

Sorry no caps.
