Sounds scary. I fear a BBC World/News like merger coming....

Terrifying thought. We've already lost a decent News Channel, we don't need to lose another. Not sure that would work given the advertising complexities.

RE: CNN - Global TV - 13-02-2024

Mark Thompson is clearly removing money from TV production to go full Digital. How will it look like is very uncertain, but I do not think diminishing their global footprint even more will get them to any good situation. Their ratings in the US are so modest that losing their global audience will only get things worst, moreover, I do believe they have a bigger margin to grow abroad than in the US.

This lacks so much context it’s almost journalistic malpractice. Need more info here.

And I have seen no one else share anything else from this meeting.

Curious that as of this moment there’s not a single article about this — not even from the Washington Post guy who tweeted it (or do we say Xed it now?).

RE: CNN - excel99 - 14-02-2024

This could quite easily refer to changes in Digital or Newsgathering, just as much as TV. I'm guessing there aren't that many dedicated TV staff in London these days, since most behind the scenes TV roles were moved to Atlanta in 2019

RE: CNN - Global TV - 15-02-2024

CNN en Espanol has finally changed it’s graphics in the last few days.

The WRAP has the latest on Mark Thompson's plans for CNN. Salary cuts seem likely. Hang on the ride is getting bumpy. Sounds like they need to get digital and quick and those $20mil salaries arent worth the return.

Some of these CNNers must be missing Chris Light now. Big Grin The man they wanted out, so much. Rolleyes

Good decision to slash those totally unrealistic, outrageously high salaries. Most of these ''star'' anchors can't equal what they earn and ratings/ revenue they bring to the network so it's about time some balance was achieved there.

Also, they could get rid some of the many talking heads they have on, I mean all of these people that pop up for political coverage. Stick to a your reporters and actual reporting.

CNN could become more like the BBC with regular news bulletins every hour, keeping the primetime hours as more anchor driven. That wouldn't be a bad thing.

I agree about the salaries. Lets be frank newsgathering is bloody expensive. CBS's 60 Minutes can justify its cost because it brings in the ratings. Sadly for CNN its been so badly damaged, by a number of factors (internal and external) its gonna be hard to fix. The US is so divided that primetime is a battlefield and if you dont fit into one of the political camps where do you fit. Because before Zucker started his siege on the channel, they played it straight down the middle politically and ratings sunk below FNC years ago.

THey have effectively dismantled their international news operation to focus on US politics, and they are seemingly no longer interested in or cant adequately compete. Unless the BigWigs are prepared to reassemble the global news operations, but again its so expensive.

But the NYTimes is one the most respected newspapers globally. And it has a "posh", upscale, upmarket brand. Can Thompson reverse CNN, i think its near impossible. But I hope for the best.
