Well that's what I always assumed

Wouldn't the star on the top of the tree have been obscured by the BBC logo? It would've been zoomed out slightly if it was meant to be Chameleon branded, I think.

They were Chameleon-branded (it was just before the Lens idents launched - they were delayed if you remember). And yes, the star was obscured...

Some thought the framing of the tree suggested Aardman had expected the old BBC One logo at the bottom of the screen, but then conversely the semi-circular motion around the tree might have also suggested it was meant to have been given the lens treatment.

I’m not sure we ever had a definitive answer.

Those idents were definitely aligned with the then unlaunched Lens idents.

The 3 variants of the same location at different times of the day, combined with the way the camera moves across. Completely on brand.

Ironically, when the standard Lens idents did launch in 2022, the first Christmas idents after that ("The Boy, The Mole...." ones) would feature no similarities to the Lens idents whatsoever.

If it really had been the intention to apply the lens effect to the Shaun the Sheep idents, then it would only have been to their detriment - it would have introduced unnecessary extra clutter and obscured the main action in the centre of the screen.  I think those idents worked perfectly well in the simpler form in which we saw them.

And if it's correct that this year we're getting a 'ragbag' of past idents, then this reminds we of what we had from BBC2 around the mid-2010s - a jumble of old idents from different eras, in that case made worse by the addition of some terrible soundtracks: https://theident.gallery/bbc2-2015-xmas.php

From what I can make out, it isn't so much a "ragbag" but a re-use of some of 2020's with two new additions to bring them up to date.

I do remember those re-uses of BBC Two's idents and the "Two two two two two two two" choral soundtrack to the melody of Deck The Halls. They were terrible.

I found those “Two Two Two” soundtracks to be bloody annoying - probably the lowest point for Christmas pres on the BBC and especially at a point when BBC Two’s package was an utter mess. Thank goodness they only used those soundtracks for one year. If they had reused them for the rest of the 2’s lifespan at Christmas I never would’ve forgiven the BBC. (Still haven’t forgiven them for O**ness either, but that’s another story…)

In other news, the papers are reporting that Toy Story 4 is confirmed to be the big Christmas Day movie to be shown after the King’s speech:

Can I get my annual "it's the King's Christmas Message, not the King's Speech" grumble out of the way early?

Do you want to let the official Royal website know, as they call it ‘The King’s Christmas Broadcast’?
