Sorry I'm late to the party, but these are nice idents tbh. Also interesting is that the BBC animation at the start of the idents is in 50fps (at least in Northern Ireland anyway) which is nice. Well done BBC!

It does make sense to reuse them. I'm just unsure if it makes sense to reuse the concept.

Nothing will ever better this absolute perfection...

I think hysterics aren’t really warranted - they’re not bad idents and they’re mixing them in with some new ones. It could be a lot worse and I really don’t think the average viewer is going to notice or mind too much.

I don’t really understand why they haven’t played with the Lens concept for a set of Christmas idents though - these past few years have felt like the logo slapped over a cute animation which is pretty jarring compared to the rest of the set. I hope we see something like that in the future - there’s a lot of potential there for some really pretty idents.

Reusing Christmas idents is fine, as long as you have something new along side them, and this is what BBC One has done this year

RE: BBC One Christmas 2023 - SteveRW - 03-12-2023

They made some pretty damn good endboards in 2020 to match the idents. It's such a shame that the idents are just plonked on screen without any corresponding pres to match it. I watched last night and they didn't even use the falling snow effect on most of their junctions. The BBC have become lazy and act as if to just do something for the sake of it rather than for the will of it.

I'd say both new idents are nice and pleasant enough, for what they are.

Wasn't excited by the prospect of reusing the 2020 idents (especially when lockdown-era memories are still quite fresh in the mind, personally) but I can see why they've done it - for variety's sake.

These classic idents just highlight what’s missing today from TV - the spirit of creativity and a sense of magic. Sadly, the corporate takeover of the UK’s creative sector is complete. It’s the same in radio. Everything is so bland and formatted these days. A previous poster said ‘nobody will notice or care’. That’s the problem. Perhaps they won’t but if you don’t try to create a magical escape on tv for your audience, don’t expect any customer loyalty. It’s the same in retail - those who try survive these days. Those who say ‘just cut corners, nobody will notice’ soon wither away.

If you’re being melodramatic about me saying I doubt the average viewer will notice or mind then you’ve got the wrong end of the stick. I dislike it when people use that as a shutdown on here because it’s a presentation forum - but in this case it’s quite apt? No one in their right mind is going to see they’ve used the same tree ident in 2020 (in conjunction with a decent amount of new idents, mind you) and go “OH… they’ve cut corners I see… no more BBC One for me.”

This is an extremely dramatic post I have to say. If we’re going this route about it we may as well start sobbing about the fact BBC One used Wallace and Gromit idents in 2008. That must’ve been when they lost the war to streaming, right?

RE: BBC One Christmas 2023 - VMPhil - 03-12-2023

I’m not going to be melodramatic but a year of reused BBC One Christmas idents is always very underwhelming, as it usually means it’s not a very exciting year programme wise, but let’s hope that they will do something special for Wallace & Gromit next year.
