Linear ratings are gradually dropping though meaning long running shows generally rate lower each year

Assuming there wasn’t a low rating first series years ago, this means each year will generally be the ‘LOWEST RATING EVER’ which presses all the right buttons and gets all the engagement on Twitter

These ratings are never put into context. If you read twitter last November with all the capital letter ratings posts you’d think I’m a Celeb was dead and buried, but then, oh, it was still one of the highest earring entertainment shows on TV.

I can't imagine awards shows get a huge lift from timeshifted or on demand viewing - once results are out there there isn't much point. The key moments are usually clipped up for the socials too.

They add a bit but not a lot. Last year’s Brits got a 7 day audience of 3.8m from an overnight of 3.2m.

You would think it would get an uplift from streaming as its appeal is with a younger demographic.

But generally seems to be a decline in audiences for awards ceremonies, they just aren't that popular.

The novelty wore off many years ago - all the big stars in one place, but then the public felt it was simply back slapping, lick lick, kissing up to celebrity, which caused viewers to turn off.

Not wanting to steer the conversation away from the thread topic, but surely there’s a better way to measure accurate figures than relying on a few thousand people’s viewing and multiplying.

Not really, the margin of error will be in the very low single figures.

They should Sanremo-ize or Melodifestivalen-ize that a little bit then?

By putting more emphasis on non-music intervals maybe?

No. Statistically the accuracy from adding any more in the sample wouldn't improve signficantly if they increased the sample size even ten fold. We can, statistically speaking at least, be 99% confident the ratings are accurate.

Not to contradict anything that's already been said, but Barb is currently in the process of expanding its panel from circa 5,000 households to circa 7,000 in order to improve the accuracy of its ratings in the context of the ever-increasing number of content sources. The expansion is due to complete by the middle of this year.
