At least ITV1 bother to provide proper daytime programming compared to Channel 4 - Weekdays from 6am until 2pm is all live daytime television which is great going and then from 2pm to 6pm on most weeks it is mostly all new daytime shows.

Channel 4 gave up caring about the breakfast slots, and just shove on repeats of Frasier, Third Rock from the Sun and Everybody Loves Raymond as their breakfast offering and then back to back repeats, without only Countdown normally being the only new daytime show on Channel 4

I'm talking mainly about primetime. But daytime afternoon is currently a lot of repeats and new series of things are sitting on the shelf longer before airing.

There are other signs of content thinning like Millionaire & Beat The Chasers repeats in primetime.

Repeats creeping into Saturday & Sunday early evening. There seem to be less new programmes at weekends now.

Drama imports from ITVX appearing on the main channel.

Which would still affect multiple freelance jobs at a time most freelancers say they are out of work.

The move towards streaming may have been inevitable but should more have been done to ensure the streaming landscape wasn't dominated by US players who are somewhat self regulated? To be fair the big three at least provide a good chunk of UK content but their move from subscription to ad-based subscriptions is clearly disrupting the market.

Of course but ITV don’t have to announce cuts to freelancers in the way redundancies have to be announced.

ITV1 isn't jam-packed with new shows all the time but you can't really blame them when Tipping Point repeats outrate new stuff like Jeopardy and presumably Riddiculous (which never seems to have its figures published). In primetime, the soaps provide a steady returning audience throughout the week and although repeats of Millionaire aren't ideal I doubt a new episode would rate much better as the brand isn't as strong as it once was. 8pm shows of any type are difficult to get right and increasingly they are promoted to 9pm for the lack of options there. Also, you can't have the usual dramas with folk getting stabbed etc before the watershed.

As for Channel 4 daytime, I'm not sure them trying to compete is a good idea. Any new shows would fail and ultimately be a waste of money. Post Countdown could be looked at though.

It just shows how far we have come in TV, especially with Channel 4, over how much a channel cares about daytime shows.

For me, the best daytime schedule was when Deal or No Deal and The Paul O'Grady Show were on, a great near 2 hour block - I remember The Paul O'Grady Show in 2007 saying they were getting 5 to 6 million viewers a night at 5pm, I sincerely doubt Channel 4 even gets to the 500,000 mark now in 2024 at 5pm weekday
