UEFA Euro 2024 - RhysJR - 01-12-2023

With the group stage draw taking place in Hamburg tomorrow, there seems no better time to launch this thread.

To the basics,
The tournament takes place in Germany from June 14th to July 14th, with the opening game in Munich's Allianz Arena nad the final in Berlin's Olympiastadion.

All matches in the UK will be shown on either the BBC or ITV, as is now always the case. As things stand, RTÉ will broadcast all matches in Ireland.

In a different approach to normal, no kick-off times for any matches (bar the opening game and final at 20:00 BST) have been confirmed ahead of the draw. This will presumably mean that the UK TV picks will be delayed for a few days whilst matches are allocated the best kick-off times by UEFA. I think it's safe to assume that matches will kick-off at 14:00, 17:00 and 20:00 UK time as was the case in 2016 and 2021.

The big broadcast headline so far is that no coverage will be filmed in UHD. A confusing and backwards step if this transpires.

Though, German broadcaster Magenta TV announced their coverage plans today, and they do say they will show every game in UHD. One would imagine this might only be upscaled to UHD, but it possibly indicates the reports earlier in the year were incorrect. Magenta will show five matches exclusively, with 34 games on ARD and ZDF, with 17 games on RTL who enter the German tournament rights equation.

To the draw itself. This will take place on Saturday at 18:00 CET / 17:00 BST from Hamburg. It will be shown live on UEFA.com, BBC Two and on ITV X. England (Pot 1) and Scotland (Pot 3) have already qualified, with Wales potentially still to qualify via the play-offs in March (the play-off winners in Pot 4).

The play-off draw from last week has given a likely preview of the intro and graphics for the upcoming tournament. Despite not being a colour asscoiated with Germany, two tones of blue were used in the on sceen graphics last week. Below is also a chance to the Euro 2008 music with the interim intro, before something new comes tomorrow.

Of course if Wales get there, their matches will be shown in Welsh on S4C as well.

The Irish coverage of the draw will be on the RTÉ Player and RTÉ News Channel from 5pm tomorrow.

What type of HD cameras are they using for the Euros. Is that information available in one of the links in the OP?

How does that work? Huh 

34 (ARD/ZDF) + 17 (RTL) = 51

And as far as I know the tournament only got 51 matches. So where does Magenta take five exclusive matches from?

I think RTL are broadcasting five less matches than they were going to originally, if I've read the quote below correctly. So all 51 on Magenta, five exclusively, with 34 on ARD/ZDF and 12 on RTL.

Scotland play in the opening game.

England's group has no real popcorn ties, which can't be said about the potential Wales group. Scotland have a good chance to qualify for the knockouts.

Jonathan Pearce treated it somewhat like Eurovision, which is probably more respect than it deserved. As these things go though the actual draw was done pretty quickly.


Trying to remember what happened last time in relation to BBC/ITV announcing their picks - did they wait until the play off outcome or place their picks beforehand? A final group game of Wales v France to stay in the tournament is a very different match to Finland v France.

I'm not sure what someone like Jonathan Pearce adds for an English-speaking audience; it's easy enough to follow with everything being conducted in English and most stuff he adds is not essential (I had to turn it off at the end of the draw but I would guess the studio recapped where and when England, Scotland etc. played). Following the ZDF coverage in German it makes more sense to have commentary for translation purposes.

I also was pleasantly surprised how quickly the draw itself went. It was good of the BBC to start at 17:15 and not join straight away, bypassing the musical performance and interviews with the artists and Gigi Buffon. ZDF also did the same, albeit they joined straight off some ski jumping, but also showed highlights of the U17 World Cup final rather than the music.

The BBC and ITV TV picks were announced on the Thursday after the draw in 2019, which surprised me as Scotland were not yet qualified so those picks were 50/50 bets (an England match at 20:00 on a Friday, v. Scotland or anyone was a good pick either way though).
