RE: Hits Radio Rebrand Rollout - IanJRedman - 27-02-2024

It was always going to happen sooner or later, but I'm genuinely a bit surprised Bauer is rebranding Wave 105. By all accounts, it's an extremely successful station, which is why it's never been touched up to now. That said, I expect Bauer has been desperate to get GHR back on FM in the area, after Nation stopped franchising it.

A bit of a strange decision to retain a local Breakfast show when they aren't doing that anywhere else in England on Greatest Hits Radio....

But it's all a bit of a mess in a 'classic Bauer' way, as both Wave 105 & Pirate share music right now, but one becomes GHR and the other Hits.

And yet it feels like only yesterday they aligned these two stations closer together to share the same playlist, with pirate only opting out of the Wave playlist on Sundays, the odd different golden hour and for the double duchy features. Personally, I'd probably give it another year before Cornwall will lose its only local show, for it to become part of a "West Country" show from Bristol, like Heart and GHR does currently...

I'm sad to see them both to and send my thoughts to everyone at both stations who are going to lose their jobs

I'm also from the same area and moved to Cornwall in 2008 and echo your sentiments and would like to wish everyone the best for the future.

I remember back in 2020 when Bauer rebranded most of the UKRD, Lincs, Wireless and Celador stations, one of the reasons they gave for Pirate remaining as a standalone station was that Cornwall had such a strong and distinct cultural identity, so it would be inappropriate to network the station. Obviously that doesn’t matter anymore.

I must say that this news comes as a bit of a shock. Wave 105 has been a real success story, and given how it's remained pretty much untouched for several years (and even had a complete rebuild of their facilities a few years ago, it's a shock to see that it's being replaced.

I'm not as surprised about Pirate FM, but it's still rather upsetting. It's been the soundtrack to my holidays for longer than I can remember, and it's still my mum's radio station of choice back home (courtesy of Alexa). I'm more gutted about this than I was about losing the station that was actually local to my home. I would say Bauer have really misjudged how this will go down, but it's pretty clear at this point that they have no clue what they're doing.

Wave’s Rajar figures are on a real high at the moment too, currently in the low 20s in terms of % reach, compared to the low teens where they were just after the Covid hiatus.

Pirate’s figures, meanwhile, have shown the familiar ‘just been bought by Bauer’ slump. I suspect this drop in audience has helped them make their decision to rebrand in something of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Pointed out elsewhere, but you could argue someone is being quite clever with some of the tracks being playlisted on Wave tonight:

Nothing Lasts Forever
Please Don't Go
Scandalous
Criticize
This Is It
Couldn't Get It Right
I Wanna Stay with You

Seemed even more pointed in the 10pm hour.

Since U Been Gone
Is It Over Now
Sweet Dreams
If Leaving Me is Easy
Don't Speak
Let Her Go
Lose Control

I was hoping for a bit of Soft Cell, personally...

They'd have to over-ride the ol' Acorn to do that on Pirate...

Do they ever play it nowadays? Needs an outing before GHR gets switched on.
