RE: The TV Gameshow Thread - RhysJR - 29-01-2024

Think I spotted a factual error in the Only Connect final.

In the second round, the question's answer was supposed to be the longest railway station name in the UK, with the correct answer according to the graphic/Victoria was Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. This in my opinion is incorrect, as the station name is officially Llanfairpwll (although there is a sign with the long name on the platform, so with a small bit of rewording that would be correct).

Anyway, congratulations to the Thrifters!

The scheduling of Only Connect to climax a while before the other two BBC Two Monday quizzes has confused me a little. Interesting to see that there will be repeats of Only Connect airing next week to fill that gap.

I'm not usually a fan of shows failing to replace departing hosts and just sticking with guest hosts but actually think it has worked quite well for Pointless.

Not really a departed host though is it, its just like having someone different in dictionary corner on Countdown.

Id say it was a spoiler as that game mechanic can only be played out if there is a certain ending to the game but I'm happy to agree to disagree and I'm sure I will still enjoy stripping the show over the next 9 nights

More than one Traitor or no Traitors?

The Traitors Australia series 2 spoiler

Multiple traitors left

By Steve mentioning the end game mechanic I knew that it had to be a Traitor V Traitor final end game which is known as The Traitors Dilemma as this is the only time the split or steal mechanic is used. Had it been zero traitors left any faithful in the end would have won the money equally between them. Had it been 1 traitor V 1 or more faithful at the end then the traitor would take the whole lot.

End game outcome spoiler

Another poster then said on the Traitors thread that although the outcome of UK series 2 seemed a little flat it was better than them giving no money away at all as happens in Australia series 2 which then told me that traitors chose to steal rathter than split the money so nobody won anything. Some people think this outcome has led to the show being cancelled there whilst others blame poor ratings

Limitless Win is more than the usual 5 episodes this time (13 eps recorded to be split apparently) and "series 3" ep 8 ends Feb 24th (according to LW wiki), which is when I had seen Takeaway starting?

An interesting article from The Guardian on the changing nature of TV cash prize money.

The Guardian article made my eyes roll. I don't think the prizes on gameshows are that stingy and TBH if you're applying for shows for monetary reasons then it's not the right mindset.

Most people who go on a gameshow or any sort of show with a cash prize won't win and the majority of people who apply and go on, winning money isn't the sole reason they applied,

I think it depends on the show and the stakes. I’m sure people who go on something like Eggheads or even the Chase it probably that bothered about winning prize money. Someone who gets to FFF on Millionaire is probably very keen to win big money, particularly in the original era when people had to pay to get on and it became a bit of an industry getting on. I think someone who gets on Deal or No Deal would probably be set on having a cash injection of at least a few grand too.
