Being nasty doesn't make it either as proven by the amount of flop shows forcing that dynamic.

Of course when Weakest Link came along a big deal was made out of it and the host being mean. But that wasn't particularly "nasty" as such, it was just a moody host in a moody environment (and of course all that was toned down in later series anyway).

The US strike has now led to an over 50s version of The Bachelor, something I doubt would have been commissioned without it - though that said think Davina is doing an over 50s version of Love Island for ITV. ABC yesterday revealed a fall schedule with no new scripted shows at all, relying on gameshows, reality shows and news formats.

In other news The Cube USA has returned on TBS this month too having been sat on the shelf a long time with WBD holding back new content. Format largely the same as their first season which replaced the Swap from the UK version with "One Shot" - which is the host doing a game instead. Think they've also bought back Trial Run which was absent from the first series and UK revival.

P.S. The last US revival of Deal or No Deal bought in something I could see being added to the ITV revival as a format twist - the counter offer. At one point during the game the player can name their price at which they'd sell the box to the banker which the Banker can then accept or reject. Think that's a better twist than Box 23 or the Offer Button.

Some of Anne's comments were seen as nasty at the time but made it past the edit because they were deemed acceptable back then. Most of it was good natured ribbing though, thankfully.

Nowadays where creators make it part of a show's format for people to not get on and as if to signpost what is being done and because viewers don't complain at first somehow the format isn't the problem, that's a different thing altogether. It's understandable why shows like this get made because TV has to be entertaining and there isn't the desire and/or the profitability in making other types of shows, but it's still sad, IMO anyway.

It was always quite amusing on our version of Deal Or No Deal when a contestant would deal and go on to have a perfect run of boxes (had they still been in live play!), often Noel would rub it in just a little too much Big Grin

Then the Banker would ring and do a pantomine laugh down the phone

As well as the Alison Hammond one, how many dance shows do we need?

RE: The TV Gameshow Thread - Brekkie - 07-06-2023

What's the Alison Hammond one - haven't heard of that?

Most dance shows are destined to fail it seems, often because ITV tend to put them up against the early weeks of Strictly. The Greatest Dancer didn't do too bad really and probably would have got another series if it wasn't for covid, though the most successful in terms of number of series would be Sky's Got to Dance - which was essentially BGT without the other acts.

The Alison Hammond one is Clear The Dancefloor, for the BBC.

Puzzling (soon to be called Quizzing with Lucy then a week later Worsley's War) on Channel 5 starts 8pm on Thursday 22nd. PopMaster TV with Ken Bruce on More4 starts 8pm on Mon 26th. Both one hour shows.

RE: The TV Gameshow Thread - Jon - 19-06-2023

It’s surprising ITN haven’t considered pitching a Brainteaser style show to Channel 5 to broadcast live from the Vine studio in the early afternoon in and effort to get even more value for money.
