I quite liked The Exit List on ITV although I guess the ‘twist’ wouldn’t really have worked for more than one series
Matt Allwright proved himself to be a great game show presenter with that and The Code, a shame he hasn’t really done anything else in the genre since

The set for The Exit List would probably cause it to be deemed too expensive to make nowadays, yet shows seem to be able to afford to splash the cash elsewhere as if big prize money somehow makes up for crap sets and inane waffle.

Would the old Andrew Castle vehicle Divided work these days?
I thought it had one of the most brilliant and cleverly strategic final rounds. In splitting the pot 60%, 30% & 10% and leaving the contestants to fight it out between them who left with what.

I never liked the end game on that, it seemed a bit harsh to be honest.
Golden Balls had the same "problem", but even if you pinched the whole £300 or whatever was in, it just became a nice day out. Its when you get into the range of four, five, even six figure jackpots and somebody nicked the lot that it left a nasty taste in the mouth.
All Divided did was take that to its logical conclusion, especially if you can't agree on how to split the pot - and when you had those people who were adamant they were having the lion's share of the pot come what what may, it was usually obvious the whole group would end up with sod all in due course.
I sometimes wonder if there were major fisticuffs or verbal confrontations after the cameras stopped rolling on Golden Balls - especially as the post game segments were clearly done separately on the occasions where somebody's just had £20k pulled out from under them...

A bit of an evil end game was a staple of gameshows in the noughties - and that Split ir Steal format also ended up on The Bank Job, George Lamb's quiz show which ran for a year or two alongside Million Pound Drop.
Indeed other than the very occasional episode of Millionaire, a week or so of Deal or No Deal, some C5 daytime efforts like Brainteaser and the early end games of the lottery quizzes are there any other game shows over the last couple of decades that went out live?

I guess the gameshow elements of the likes of This Morning, Big Breakfast etc would count.
As standalone formats, Test the Nation and other similar formats during the interactive TV fad?

All you've said is mostly why I don't think there is enough of an appetite for these types of shows returning. The supposed success of The Traitors may have tickled the fancy of some people in TV but contestants openly having money stolen from them is problematic in so many ways and this isn't twenty years ago where viewers are naive and people are powerless and can't take to social media and say what they think and/or reveal what goes on behind the scenes.

Only aired four episodes, out of 12-20 (it's not known how many were made).

According to some pre-show blurb they made 12 episodes, which means most of them were never seen. though general consensus seems to suggest 20 were actually made:

Which may suggest ITV were going to air it in two blocks - maybe 12 and 8 once it had come and gone in a blaze of glory. But who knows?
The Guardian reported ITV were planning to finish the run of the show towards the end of 2001 or early 2002. Which never happened.
Surprised Challenge never picked it up, though since the bulk of show was unaired it probably costs a bit to clear. They did show some episodes of the later Dale Winton Supermarket Sweep incarnation that ITV never aired, but since it was a popular show for them it was probably worth doing.
