I imagine Bilky might be referring to the death of Bobby Charlton, so had their been a question about him it might have been deemed insensitive just hours after that was announced.

That happens so often its beyond scary.
It happened on one of Dale Winton's lottery vehicle shows where they asked a question about somebody who had not long died and according to a caption that had been hurriedly thrown up "a" question had skipped but the prize money or jackpot or whatever it was was accurate.

That’s a good possibility, although the below tweet confirmed the as seen on TV Blankety Blank line up at 13:50, the Bobby Charlton news wasn’t announced till 16:00.

So I’m guessing the change happened at some point after magazines went to print, but not as late as yesterday afternoon…

If the change to the episodes was because of the Bobby Charlton news that would seem a little odd because Channel 5 showed 'The Greatest TV Shows of the 60's' last night with a section about the 1966 World Cup!

RE: The TV Gameshow Thread - Nobby - 22-10-2023

It would only be a little odd if Channel 5 and BBC One employed the same sensitivity reader and had them work to the same brief when checking each briadcasters schedules and it was confirmed that the reason for changing the scheduled episode of Michael McIntyre's The Wheel and/or Blankety Blank was because of a positive or neutral reference to Bobby Charlton. If none of these conditions are true, it may not be odd at all.

RE: The TV Gameshow Thread - Neil Jones - 22-10-2023

Might just be co-incidence that the episode was swapped, and then announcement of Charlton's death came along. Dare say that has nothing to do with the swapping..

After all for most gameshows the order the episodes air in don't really matter. Its only when contestants straddle episodes you can't have a problem with the episode order, so the likes of Countdown for example, and back in the day Blockbusters as well. "In a change to the advertised episode" may apply primarily to sitcom but is probably valid for gameshows as well.

Though that being said, IIRC didn't Countdown either run out of episodes or for some other reason they had to swap an episode out?

RE: The TV Gameshow Thread - JAS84 - 22-10-2023

It wasn't because of Charlton anyway. Yes Gabby Logan hosts football programmes, but she's also married to a rugby player, which explains her being there as an expert on the Six Nations rugby union tournament, not football.

Pointless is another example where episodes can't air out of order. Contestants can play for three shows unless they reach the final sooner, and the jackpot raises each episode that it's not won.

But obviously it would depend on the context and what was said. It's not a rule that you can't reference recently dead people on TV, it's up to the broadcaster to decide if they're inappropriate.

Clips of his most famous match would work well as a tribute so there's no reason to change it

As always it's all about context

RE: The TV Gameshow Thread - Brekkie - 24-10-2023

I don't think anyone said it was for that reason - it's just that is the sort of thing which may cause a last minute change. The real reason is probably much more mundane.
