There are shows that Channel 4 could make that have twists and are dramatic but it's a closed shop. Those working in development who are much to blame for the lack of commissioning and living off past glories aren't going to give up their jobs so you end up with decisions/ideas coming mostly from the same people.

It's a shame as I felt the Circle had a lot of life still left in it. However I think the fault was having both a Celeb series and then Series 3 running back to back. Series 3 was also completed pre-recorded which lost a lot of the interactivity and live feel to it, even though it got talked about more due to the actions of some of the contestants.

The US version on Netflix has been too over the top and features forced personalities which doesn't make it enjoyable. Sometimes it's best to keep the premise simple and not change too much - The Traitors has changed very little from Series 1 to Series 2 and it still works just as well.

Destination X is interesting as it has been commissioned in the same way as The Traitors in partnership with NBC. It does sound quite different.

Don't expect that to see that too soon. As the winning tender to produce it was only awarded in December.

Poor Kirsty Gallacher appeared on Beat The Chasers but didn't even get a chance to do so as she got the first question wrong!

Thinking of contestants who became a problem for winning too much - Michael Larson who memorised patterns from the board on Press Your Luck in the US - what about that show over here? HTV West had it for two series 1991-92 but it's not something with a lot of history in the UK and part of the reason it was cancelled was because of budget cuts.

We didn't really have gameshows that rolled over from episode to episode, most of them were either self contained or it was the jackpot that rolled over (Twenty One had a "returning champion" system in the 1950s, though that format had other issues in the US anyway which had a knock-on effect over here). A handful of other shows did over the years but that was the exception to the rule with a few variations... Krypton Factor for example

It was probably Blockbusters (and Countdown before it) that encompassed a full roll-over format, and many other shows since then have continued it. There are probably other examples.

Anyway the point to this ramble is before 1993 I think it was, the most you could win on a gameshow was typically £3k, later rising to about £6k, before being dropped altogether. So the Michael Larson thing couldn't really happen over here if you were taking home more than the price, so the game would be designed in a way not to breach that (Wheel of Fortune is the obvious example here, as the wheel was purely points and anything actually worth anything like the car was capped value-wise). The Press Your Luck example for HTV only (according to Ukgameshows) only gave away £200 which defeated the whole point of the format, and it was later shifted to some graveyard slot somewhere and never seen again.

It was the comments on the Jeopardy thread about contestants that made me think of Larson. I was aware that it couldn't happen in the UK for various reasons but mentioned it to give some context as to why I thought of Press Your Luck.

If the show were to be made here, Push Your Luck would probably be a better title as I haven't heard the former ever being used in everyday language.

Gladiators losing 600k is not too bad considering it was the launch last week. WoF gains 300k and will have to wait and see if it holds onto that for the rest of its run.

This will be live on YouTube.

I expect two of my hall of fame votes to be in the hall of shame and two HOS in the HOF. 2023 was a very marmite year.

A drop for Gladiators was inevitable, so to still be doing 5.4 million is an amazing result when you compare it to everything else.

It's quite ironic that the figures it's getting now and getting praised for are about the same figures it was getting in the late 90s that led to its cancellation... (Yes yes, I know 5m in 1999 isn't what 5m is now)
