They finally got a bulletin out announcing the news at 6.30.

Which is a real problem when you have one newsreader doing pre-recorded bulletins for multiple radio stations up to half an hour in advance of them being broadcast (although most newsrooms were given the heads up about the King well before 6pm so no excuse really).

I suppose the argument is that, in a real emergency, you put out a single live bulletin instead which covers the emergency breaking news simultaneously and you either use generic branding or drop all branding to bring in the news.

BBC Radio did a simultaneous announcement, for example, when the Queen died.

I’m not sure Absolute’s owner Bauer has the option of doing this because of the way the stations operate technically (all running off the playout software RCS Zetta but quite siloed) - as far as I’m aware, they don’t do any live news on any station and there’s no line down which a live bulletin could be broadcast.

Ok, this was kind of distasteful... Maybe if they arranged the wording on a different way.

Listening back to Global it seems either some don't get it at 6pm, others just carry on.Capital Scotland hand over for breaking news in the 6pm hour.

A look behind the scenes on Sky's coverage, with Anna Botting having some wardrobe drama.

I would have used the title “King Charles’ Health”, I think.

The bottom, smaller, half of the text is probably OK.

In terms of broadcasting 6pm was probably the smoothest time for it be announced.

Would BBC1 have cut into a programme had the announcement come at a non junction time? Or waited till the end of whatever was airing.

I can imagine there would be a way of getting a single bulletin loaded into Zetta to replace all existing news carts in time for an announcement like that.

But if their newsroom didn't get a headups and only found out via IRN flashing it at 17:57, that's far too late for anything to be done.

RE: King Charles Breaking News Coverage - BBI45 - 06-02-2024

I'm planning to capture as many different radio stations making the announcement as I can later. The one only I've heard so far is Wave 105, and they did run with it at the start of their 6pm bulletin. I'd assume that all other Bauer stations (as leewilliams said), had a prerecorded bulletin which caused issues on this occasion.
