BBC2's Diamond Anniversary Programming - Omnipresent - 10-04-2024

BBC2 will celebrate its Diamond Anniversary on 20th April 2024. So far there are two special music compilations on its anniversary weekend "60 Songs: BBC Two at 60" and "Classical Years: BBC Two at 60".

Quote:A celebration of some of the biggest names in music, offering an epic compilation of 60 songs performed over the past 60 years to celebrate BBC Two's diamond anniversary.

All the performances featured originated on BBC Two and have formed an important part of the channel's output over its 60-year history. Featuring such musicians as Joni Mitchell, Elton John, the Rolling Stones, Dolly Parton, Stormzy, Sam Smith, Kylie Minogue, Bob Marley, Blondie and Queen.

Quote:A celebration of the astonishing breadth of talent from 60 years of BBC Two’s finest classical performances. From its first days on air in 1964, BBC Two has placed classical music at the centre of its arts programming. From Jacqueline du Pré to Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Verdi to Stravinsky, Maria Callas to Jessye Norman, the greatest names have thrilled in concerts, films, and features.

So far there's no sign of an updated Happy Birthday BBC2 documentary or repeats of previous anniversary programming like Harry and Paul's Story of the Twos.

With the BBC’s 100th anniversary celebrations still fresh in mind, I’d expect BBC Two’s 60th will be a bit more low-key than they otherwise would be.

Also 60 isn't that significant an anniversary as 50 or 100.

This feels like no effort at all - just a couple of standard weekend music compilation shows tenuously linked to the event.

Since most of BBC 2 is now a dustbin for repeats, no surprise they aren't going to bother too much with anniversary programming.

BBC 2 scheduling is just awful - 6am until 6pm on weekdays is literally 12 hours of mostly repeats or simulcasting BBC News. What a waste of a channel

Classic example of today's schedule for Friday 12th April 2024 on BBC 2 = 6.15am until 9.00am back to back repeats. Followed by FOUR hours of simulcasting BBC News. And then back to back repeats for 1pm until 6.30pm.

Even between 6.30pm and 10.30pm, only 2.5 hours is new programming.

Literally a dustbin for repeats - what is the point of BBC 2 anymore?

Sports overflow, for example Wimbledon?

Yes, but outside of sport, there are hundreds of days in the year, where the channel offers nothing - I remember one former TV boss calling BBC 2 the dustbin of television channels, because it doesn't have a clue as to what it is meant to be anymore.

For me, BBC 2 should be offering children's television from 6.00am until lunchtime, with some news and of course political coverage e.g. PMQs. And then an afternoon of second chances, for viewers to enjoy classic BBC shows such as classic comedy and dramas.

In this way, the channel would save money, still be a lot of repeats, but a better position for BBC 2, offering second chances to see great archive TV shows

It’s kind of returned to what it was in the 70s and 80s, except the hours of Pages from Ceefax have become hours of news simulcasts…

It is called having a view - seems when someone's view isn't aligned with theirs, they then complain that this person has a different view
