RE: Premier League Coverage - Brekkie - 04-12-2023

A 4% increase according to the Premier League, but between two players rather than three - although Amazon's deal was pretty small in comparison.

It appears from that article that the deal secures the future of Football Focus despite recent rumours to the contrary.

I do wonder how flexible Sky can be now: say yesterday could they have promoted Liverpool v. Fulham to the main channels ahead of West Ham v. Crystal Palace instead of it being a bonus game?

There is an unexplained asterix in the PL press release for those packages and the maths for the maximum number of games per club included doesn't quite add up - i.e. max of 5 games but with Europa group stage displacements there would be a minimum of 6 (or is it 8-10 with a new format) so I'm guessing the package means games moved to the slot don't count toward the club total unless chosen as the main game.

How it is determined what is the main game remains to be seen as if there are at least three matches in one slot you'd expect Main Event and Premier League to offer separate matches, and possibly Sky Sports Football too.

Do wonder if this deals adds to the need really for a Sky Sports EFL channel as well to deal with both contracts, though almost certain both will rely on streaming much more moving forward.

It’s usually much later on alright. As you may know the ROI rights sale is done unlike any other international sale - uniquely, the rights are always divided into the same packages as the UK, with an additional package of Saturday 3pm games. The expectation is that the UK rights holders will obtain “mirror” rights to the games in Ireland, which has happened in all but one instance (Amazon failed to obtain mirror rights to its packages in Ireland, which went to Premier Sports). Would expect Premier to retain the 3pm package barring a surprise bid from VMTV.

Currently watching one of the Premier League matches on Prime Video (specifically, Luton Town vs Arsenal), and it is very noticeable that the graphics have darkened slightly, but not the camera operated parts, especially as they are making their matches in HDR this season.

For the first time, a full graphics refresh for Prime Video's Premier League coverage.

These look a bit more snazzy than the old package. A mixture of some Prime branding and advertisement style and the new Premier League world feed graphics.

And a new graphic innovation from Prime, sub indicators to show how many subs are left available per team.

I'm not entirely sure this is neccessary but nice to see something new being trialled.

Again with the 3PM Kickoffs I feel that a chance has been missed to rectify what I think is a silly restriction. I know why the  blackout is in place but the truth is many people are able to bypass the blackout by certain means. A dedicated Man City fan will travel to Old Trafford, St James Park etc irrespective of whether its being shown on TV.

In previous seasons they've only offered UHD/HDR on one match per evening.   Has it changed this year?   My menu page doesn't mention the picture format for tonight's matches.
