After a trial episode towards the end of last season, the PGMOL and Howard Webb aired the first of the regular VAR reviews this season on Sky Sports, TNT Sports and elsewhere. Good to see some of the more noteworthy and controversial incidents, such as the Onana incident in Manchester Utd. v. Wolves were included.

Watched this on demand via Sky Sports, I thought it was really good and informative, one for those that want to geek out about the decisions from the referees and those at the VAR side.

RE: Premier League Coverage - Transmission - 08-09-2023

I've noticed TNT Sports has been showing a few more shows from Premier League Productions this season, including Netbusters (which has seemingly been on Sky Sports forever) and the Fantasy Football Show, as well as the usual Preview/Review and interviews.

Is there a fantasy football show from PLP? I’ve not seen it in two seasons now.

Yep, presented by Kelly Somers. Not a huge amount of time between it going out and the deadline to pick your team, though!

RE: Premier League Coverage - RhysJR - 22-09-2023

There have been reports this week detailing what the makeup of the next Premier League broadcast cycle will likely look like.

The main headlines are:

There will be a 25% increase in the number of matches broadcast in the UK, with around 50 extra matches to be shown;

These extra matches could be included by having a new kick-off of around 18:30 on Sunday nights. There could be four kick-offs on Sundays;

There could be five packages of fifty games (not sure how that will be broken up with current weekend packages having 32 games) and the rights length could be four years rather than three;

There are some calls to scrap the Saturday blackout window, with this being a "gateway drug" for pirating streams. It is possible that WSL fixtures could be broadcast at Saturday 3pm, a less controversial option than airing top flight men's football.
In short, this will be much further inconvenience for match-going fans, who despite massively enhancing the product are neglected and treated as an afterthought at best by governing bodies and broadcasters.

Personally, I see the days of the 3pm blackout being numbered, with the rampant use of illegal streams and the clamour to show ever more football. It doesn't look like it will vanish in this rights cycle (and with the EFL moving many games away from 3pm for the benefit of the new Sky contract) but its future looks increasingly more fragile year by year. The core reason given to keep it, to protect lower league attendances, I could easily imagine being disproven if teh blackout is lost, as attendance figures are very healthy across the pyramid even with the ever increasing number games available to view from home over the last thirty years.

RE: Premier League Coverage - Brekkie - 23-09-2023

The sad thing is fans will just moan about it yet continue to put up with it rather than take action such as boycotting these matches. Sunday evening matches were one of the very unpopular things about ITV's ill-fated venture into covering the Football League 22 years ago.

There has to be a limit surely to how many matches even the most dedicated armchair fan would sit through and I do think as will likely happen with the EFL next season having some slots with multiple matches is better not just for the match going fan but the armchair fan too than having them back to back. Indeed the Sunday early afternoon slot already had that thanks to the Europa League teams not playing on Saturdays though at the moment only one of those games is usually aired.

I also think competition wise there needs to be a look at how the Premier League completely dominating the weekend schedule impacts not just on football but other sports too.

RE: Premier League Coverage - strollfan - 23-09-2023

I think the real solution to this problem is to have grassroots games played at 3pm Saturday, and Premier League and Championship games played at 2pm Sunday, or vice versa. It allows for a protected window for games in League 1 and below without televised competition, while allowing for all games to be shown on TV without undermining grassroots games.

RE: Premier League Coverage - Brekkie - 18-10-2023

Details of the invitation to tender, split into 5 packages with between 42 and 65 matches in each. Finally includes all matches on the final day, with 5 full midweek rounds. Now includes all 2pm kick offs on Sundays where games take place due to the Europa League - and no mention of the rumoured 6.30pm kick off.

RE: Premier League Coverage - Reith85 - 18-10-2023

I imagine the BBC will now lose the rights to the premier league highlights given how strapped for cash they are and the Gary Lineker furore a few months ago. I imagine ITV will secure them. Oh well.
