It was mentioned on-air that Look East are having technical upgrade work. Probably part of moving to HD.

RE: BBC/ITV East News - WMD - 15-10-2023

Politics East was shown on BBC One HD as the sustaining programme so that BBC East didn’t have to opt out.

(Also of note - Politics South West was extended to 45 minutes, so Plymouth has been timeshifting network)

As technolgist said, BBC East are based in The Forum which was a millennium project in Norwich. It replaced the old central library which had burnt down. From what I remember it was a controversial design as it was seen to be a modern building being built next to St Peter Mancroft Church. Opinions soon changed.

This website has a floor plan of the building.

https://www.hopkins.co.uk/projects/civic-and-culture/the-forum/

when you look at the floor plan, the large semi-circle is the millennium library. In front of that are the two sides which project forward with a large covered atrium. The left side houses the bbc. Id you look on the first floor you can see the 2 radio studio which have glass walls allowing the public to see in. To the right of the radio studios is the news room. There is a lock off camera where interviews can be conducted often seen on the news channel. Then behind the radio studio inside the small semi circular area is the news studio. It really is tiny.

This is ah old plan as it shows how the building was originally with the bbc having the ground floor too for their reception. This has been cut back and is a tourist information centre. The new reception is basically the area in front of the double doors leading to the small semi circle. Not shown on here is an area call “the space” afain the small semi-circle were the bbc used for bbc Introducing. They also did courses on things like film making which I attended was brilliant.

Just been doing a bit of dumpster diving back over in the Blue Place to find anything of value as to BBC Look East's move to The Forum back in around 2003-ish. Here is what I have got:

THANK YOU TV FORUM!
Courtesy of link 01 there is a link to the BBC Sense Of Place website for Norwich. As with all things in the passage of time the link doesn't work but running it through the Internet Archive provides link 02 with what was for the Beeb a quite daring reveal of the actual layout and showing what goes where. And with link 03 if you want to rewind twenty years you can read the debates at the time of Look East's move to The Forum.

When they started broadcasting from the Forum, I remember that the set was designed so that the back drop looked as if it was a window looking out across the forum in the same way the two radio studios did. Of course it was from a camera positioned in amongst the lights which round the edge of the forum.

It didn’t take long for people to realise that there was no delay on the feed and it was in fact live. You then began to get people in the background pretending to fight or fall down the stairs. Some of the videos are on YouTube.

That’s then when they blurred the back ground and added red blocks to look like coloured glass railing.

That's hilarious.  Big Grin

I think when the BBC first had the back-projection screens in N6 around 1999 which showed the newsroom, they deliberately had a delay on the feed in case anyone fell off a balcony or there was some other incident.

When they altered the image to add some red walls in the newsroom background it all just became a recorded loop.

AIUI they're going HD from tomorrow, hence the work going on this weekend

The other reason they had to delay the background was because the two screens at the back of the set were mirror images of each other. So if someone walked to the right they'd have bumped into themselves walking to the left on the other screen

BBC One East/Cambridgeshire has the "BBC News from BBC News" joint bulletin from London this evening~

Oh and good news - the joint bulletins straps are finally black rather than the NC red.
