I think that was a given.  Tokyo is the only summer Olympics since the 80s not to be anchored on location, and with Paris being as near as the games could be without being in the UK it would be ridiculous not to be based there.  Probably easier to get staff from London to Paris than from London to Salford.

I know I'm agreeing with you agreeing with me but I'd actually say Jeanette comes across as more knowledgeable in these circumstances too - viewers know Gabby's attentions have been elsewhere the last few weeks and whilst I suspect she's done a few mens tournaments then gone on to cover an athletics tournament a few days later it just doesn't quite sit well.

I guess they've the Olympics in mind but even if Gabby remained on the athletics next year, which presumably she will, I think Jeanette getting the gig this year would be fine and build up her profile to give her a presenting slot on the games next year if she isn't doing the athletics herself - although as I've said before for me I think Gabby would be more useful in a general presenting role rather than limited to the second week of athletics with virtually no studio shifts.    I would hope that if they can have Clare on location at the swimming for the first week they have Gabby anchoring the evening shift from the studio, then they basically switch roles when the athletics begins.

I think for the Olympics, Gabby will probably do the athletics as Jeanette is quite a flexible presenter who could cover any sport/shift (similar to Hazel) as well as being an trackside reporter whilst Gabby and Clare have their specialist sports (with Clare also doing the ceremonies), which will be primetime viewing for us next year thanks to it being in Paris

Jeanette is back presenting on BBC Two this morning (the first morning session since Sunday).

Looking elsewhere, I've seen clips of interviews with Virgin Media Sport microphones so it looks like they are doing there own coverage, rather than taking a basic world feed.

And the Eurosport coverage, Radzi Chinyanganya is presenting onsite from the mixed zone. On commentary is Martin Gillingham (more often a rugby commentator rather than on athletics, but is former Olympic 400m hurlder) with former Paralympic medallist Stef Reid (I think) and another male lead commentator I don't recognise. Martin did the vast majority of the action. Glancing through the coverage, there were no athlete interviews during the action, but there was onsite interviews from Caroline de Moraes and then some after the action with Radzi who was joined by Iwan Thomas. Radzi is speaking with CEST times, so presumably doing some form of pan-European coverage; that sort of thing will be far harder to execute if they kill off the Eurosport brand in the UK next year.

Purely for writing the above did I check in on the Eurosport coverage for the first time and I think I'm happy enough to stick with the BBC coverage going forward. The biggest advantage of the Eurosport/Discovery+ coverage I can see is that they have made available all the dedicated streams for the field events; these are not available via the BBC and they often are a big more neglectful of the field events so that might be something to keep in mind for some sessions over the rest of the week.

Is UHD the next 3DTV or just football being tight?   Think the Olympics were moving towards UHD being the default - is that the plan for Paris?

To contradict myself, there is some athlete interviews on the Eurosport coverage this morning with Caroline de Moraes.

They have presented us with this clanger from this morning's 200m heats, as American 100m winner Sha'Carri Richardson is captioned as Jamaican silver medallist Shericka Jackson, who is not from Great Britain. Very poor.

I don't think it's another 3DTV - UHD is fairly standard on streaming platforms. I think it's just UEFA being tight. Euro 2020 was available in UHD on iPlayer so this seems like such a regressive move.

As for the Paris Olympics, if it's anything like Tokyo, virtually all the production was in UHD I think, but how widely that's distributed is another issue. The BBC has never shown the Olympics in UHD, but I think in Tokyo that was partly down to the logistics of it being a remote production during Covid. Unless only Discovery has UHD rights, is that possible?

Compare how many UHD / 4K TVs are out there to how many 3D TVs were sold - on that alone, you can tell that it's nothing like 3D TV.

You can watch UHD normally too, you don't have to sit wearing glasses. That alone was one reason why 3D was never going to take off.

You’d imagine BBC Scotland (the channel) will get some of highest viewing figures ever today, at least south of the border.

They’re showing the Hibs/Villa Conference league qualifier first leg at the moment. To go back to a previous conversation on a different thread, BBC Scotland graphics showing the old Aston Villa logo, whilst the stadium screens are updated with the new one.

Bizarrely there is no BBC DOG part of the standard BBC Sport scoreboard. Despite the channel having a DOG I thought it was usually present as well.

As much as I hope she gets back to winning long jump medals, Jazmin Sawyers has fitted straight into the BBC athletics commentary box tonight - sounds very comfortable co-commentating on the Pole Vault
