I spotted some interesting on some cycling coverage Eurosport were covering earliet today - "Live Mountain Bike World Cup".

Basically going round a course on some rugged terrain somewhere in France according to the EPG that involved a trip through a heavily forested section. They covered this section with a drone going through the trees, round the trees and it was probably about as close to first person vision as you could possibly get without plonking your butt on a bike and going there.

I know drones aren't new to sports coverage and most stadiums have a variation on them with wires (Wirecam I think its called), but it was new to me that live footage was coming from a drone behind bikers in the middle of an environment that I was half expecting something to drop out - if not the signal then the drone itself to crash into something Smile But it didn't.

I presume to get live video/sound out of whatever camera the drone was using and cut to it on the live broadcast, its no different to getting live pictures off a helicopter. But presumably for "professional" drones there's a larger reception field than you get for a budget drone?

Barbarians rugby match in June). Saying that, all of the other terrestrial channels were out of the loop cricket-wise for a few years before they showed the CWC.

Compared to the previous Cricket on 5, this shouldn't be much cost outside of the rights payment, with world feed commentary mandatory in broadcasts. By the looks of it, programmes could be aired at the traditional time of 19:00 due to the timezone of India - which is far better than when the 2015 highlights were almost 24 hours late, airing after the News at Ten (likely at Sky's behest one would imagine).

Yes, I'd agree that the production costs will be far less than the ECB contract that C5 used to hold.

When Channel 4 had the 2019 Cricket World Cup highlights, they were very canny with the production - Sunset and Vine produced their highlights and they were also the ICC's host broadcaster, which meant that the C4 highlights could fit in with the overall host broadcast operation.  In fact, there were three types of programme that C4 showed during that tournament:

- S&V produced them bespoke highlights programmes (presented by Isa Guha, and featuring a variety of talking heads) for England matches, plus the three knock-out matches (two of which featured, England, of course)

- For most other matches, they just used the generic ICC TV highlights programmes (produced by S&V for the world feed), introduced out-of-vision by one of the commentary team

- As the ICC TV programmes were produced on a 'per match' basis, not a 'per day' basis, S&V produced bespoke programmes for C4 when there were two matches in a day, with shorter edits to fit both matches into an hour. These were hosted by VoiceOver but specifically for the C4 programme

It was a good system, as all of the programmes used the same titles and music packages, and all featured the ICC TV commentary feed, of course.

The difference this time is that it is Star producing the ICC TV coverage, rather than S&V, so there might not be the ability to integrate so well into the host broadcaster operation this time round.  I fully suspect that C5 will just be banging out the ICC TV highlights programmes for most of the matches (and that most of them will be late at night, too) but you'd have thought that they might give England matches some better production, especially if they are being shown at 7pm.

Something I've noticed tonight is that the German and French broadcasts of the Germany v. France friendly in Dortmund were filmed from seperate sides of the stadium. I know it was a very common practice when internationals weren't centrally contracted but I haven't seen it (or more specifically, proof of it) in quite a while and thought it had become a thing of the past. The ARD broadcast used the standard set-up for the Westfalenstadion with the TF1 broadcast appearing to come from the opposite side of the stadium.

Elsewhere, a fully neutral broadcast from Channel 4 of Scotland v. England from Hampden Park, with Graeame Sounness and Ally McCoist joining the usual England presentation team, lead by Jules Breach and Steve Bower.
For some reason, there was no Viaplay coverage at all despite them being the broadcaster of all Scotland games. In the previous contract, the Hampden Park meeting had Sky (Scottish rights holders) and ITV coverage (England rights holders) with STV also producing their own coverage, though I don't think there was any Sky coverage of Wales or Scotland's visits to Wembley in the last few years. There is no BBC Scotland highlights either, which I think they sublet from Viaplay (though there was S4C coverage of Wales playing at Wembley in 2020 when they sublet from Sky).

Funny how TF1 translated the scorebar but ARD didn’t.

Not that surprising considering how protectionist the French are over their language. Although surprising given that the Germans were presumably in control of their own feed.

Presumably they’ve given up on virtual advertising boards they tried a few years ago? With the tech, doesn’t make sense to have two feeds, unless it’s cheaper to mount two full productions.

Suspect in this case there are two angles due to France's strict rules on alcohol advertising, though I'd have thought nowadays they'd use AR to change the sponsor boards anyway.

I've seen that done for the Champions League, with a version of the world feed using AR for countries that need the pitchside hoardings to include the alcohol-free version of their beer sponsor.

Luckily nobody sees an ad for Heineken 0.0 or Guinness 0.0 and would make the connection to their alcoholic equivalent.

By the way, Heineken 0.0 is used in Formula 1, as it is one of the corporate sponsors.

OT but there is lobbying in Ireland to have non-alcoholic brands who happen to have the same name as an alcoholic beer brand covered by the advertising ban, no doubt other jurisdictions will consider similar moves.

To turn this back somehow to TV Pres, a big casualty has been Heineken’s long running sponsorship of the EPCR Champions Cup, which has finally come to a definite end - it’ll be the Investec Champions Cup next season, and doubtless well have some Pres changes to match the new identity. (If only they could sort out the format, which they seem determined not to do).
