The deal by Premier Sports to buy out Viaplay Sports basically inherits all of Viaplay's current rights.

Premier Sports will also be relaunching their streaming platform in the UK from 2024.

An unsurprising outcome, though have to wonder how much profit/loss selling then buying back 18 months later has made them.

I think I've seen a suggestion that Premier Sports have made a profit from this (no numbers mentioned in any reports though). I think they get back more content than they sold off, with some rights like the European Tour darts and hockey already owned by Viaplay before they brought Premier Sports UK (and the next portion of the UEFA international rights of course).

For the consumer, I doubt much will really change. Neither Premier nor Viaplay put much effort into most of their content (world feed only coverage for almost anything). I think Premier was cheaper 13 months ago than Viaplay now (due to the non-sport content)? Both haven't got the best reputation from subscribers in terms of the broadcast quality of their output from what I've seen.

On a seperate but similar trajectory, what happened to the Premier Sports Ireland Twitter/X account? It launched in May, posted very frequently then hasn't posted since late July (last tweet below). Less than 500 followers too. The (very overdue at launch)  website seems to still be working and up-to-date though.

Yeah, so there’s been no official announcement yet, at least by Viaplay - Premier evidentially rushed a press release out to the Glasgow media confirming it though! Would be surprised if Premier made a loss from the transaction. There’ll no doubt be an announcement from Viaplay after the bell tonight when those Q3 results finally come out. It had to be said that several books could be written on the Setanta / Premier story now, they are the cat with nine lives of the broadcasting business, and to be returning for a third stint in the UK is extraordinary, if not unanticipated in the circumstances.

Interesting to see what happens now, in terms of the re-integration of Premier Ireland and UK. Most of the rights they have are still shared. Premier Ireland seemed to be only starting to find its feet as a standalone operation, having recently resumed studio coverage of URC games involving Irish teams (yes, from a studio right next door to where Viaplay UK were presenting separate coverage of the same games). They had resumed taking Viaplays commentary after having separate commentary for a while - Ryle Nugent has been frequently heard. They’d also picked up some ROI-only rights - RWC warm up games not involving Ireland being the big one, but they also had Wimbledon and schools rugby.

Being based in the same building will help with reintegration of course, and it’s good to see the Dublin based staff will keep their jobs.

The social media has been awful - they didn’t have any for months, then set one up and dropped it. That unfortunately is par for the course with Premier who are not great on the promotional front.

The snooker highlights are going out on Red Button (and iPlayer) now while they're delayed on BBC2 till 1.20am to show 'A Crock of Gold', Julien Temple's film about Shane MacGowan.

Snooker Extra timeshifted to 2.10am, naturally.

Jeff Stelling will be hosting Prime Video’s All The Goals show on their matchday next week. Dan Walker is also due to host a match as well.

The Viaplay results were released this morning, and is unsurprisingly not that comfortable a read for the broadcaster. The aim is now to leave the Baltic and Polish markets by the summer of 2025, with the UK operation departing soon subject to regulatory approval.

By the sounds of it, March is likely time Viapaly will revert to being Premier Sports in the UK.

Not sure if it's new, but some matches will be in HDR.

With the former location of the Goals Show (BT Sport in Stratford) no longer available, it will be in a new location described as the 'Prime Video Pavilion'. Looks like there will be a change in the interface to make it easier to move from match to match.

The FA Cup match between Alfreton and Walsall has been postponed, meaning that BBC1 have 2 hours to fill.

Not sure how practical it is, but it would make sense to start the snooker on BBC One at 1pm, rather than changing channel halfway through?

Was that a very late call then as they went to the pre-match build up live at 12.10?

Snooker has moved up to BBC1.
