Of course this isn't the first time and won't be the last there has been a disruptor in organising sports leagues - they almost always follow the same path of initially being painted as the enemy and frozen out by the official federations before eventually being integrated into the existing sports structure (i.e. Premier League, LIV Golf, Australian Cricket).

The proposed format:
https://twitter.com/SkySportsNews/status/1737793695783477628

Where it falls down is a new team wins the domestic league they enter at what essentially is the Conference League rather than the Champions League.

RE: The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own - Rdd - 21-12-2023

Yeah, the format is a closed shop really, as far as the top two tiers is concerned. Two up and two down, it would take three years for anyone in the top two tiers to fall out of Europe. On the other mass insecurity in the bottom tier where you need to finish in the top three of your eight team group just to stay in. Presumably avoids anyone building up enough experience to challenge the status quo.

The proposal not to sell TV rights (instead streaming all games for free) seems extraordinary. It’s aimed straight at getting fan acceptance, of course, but I don’t see how they plan on making the kind of money in the long run from just sponsorship and advertising that they could do from selling tv rights.

Anyway, I don’t think it’s going to happen, right now the El Classico Two are the only ones backing it. But let’s see how things play out. Laliga broadcasts tonight carrying a “#earnitonthepitch” logo. Not sure I agree with them doing that either, mind you.

It's possible they've picked TNT Sports 3 for consistency - MotoGP has pretty much always been on 2 even if there's nothing live on 1, with part of the rationale being that viewers would know where to find it.

I don't know what it is with big boxing events and technical issues recently but DAZN are the latest to have issues during a broadcast. Complete loss of audio during the Joshua V Wallin fight.

Unfortunately DAZN's apology caption for the loss of audio went out on the world feed they were providing, so it was also seen on TNT Box Office where there were no audio problems at all.

Sky Sports will be introducing some new innovations in their broadcast of the Edinburgh derby in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday. Hibernian coach Nick Montgomery will be wearing a microphone, whilst a member of the Hibs' coaching staff during the match and a player in the warm-up will wear body cams. There will also be some extra behind-the-scenes content from the day. Looking forward to seeing how these will work.

With Manchester City competing in the Club World Cup final on Friday, I did see some comments and complaints that the FIFA+ app and website (who was broadcasting the match in the UK in addition to TNT Sports) was crashing or failing to load for many. In fairness, this was probably the biggest demand this service has faced since launching, in the UK at least.

It looks like FIFA/HBS employed someone from World Rugby to design the colour palette of the world feed graphics - rather garish and ugly.

Labour MP John Spellar has brought a private members bill to the UK Parliament calling to expand the 'Crown Jewels' list of sports rights. This will include England home cricket tests and the Six Nations to be shown live on FTA TV. As ever, the official government position remains for the list to be unchanged.

Bit of an odd thing: on the 'world feed' version of the Gallagher Premiership broadcast of Bath v. Harlequins on Saturday, the colour indicator for Quins was transparent all game. On the TNT Sports broadcast, it was white as it should have been.

To the European Super League...

It looks quite speculative whether anything will materialise and in what time frame at the moment. Only Real Madrid and Barcelona have publcily supported it (though I've seen quotes attributed to a Napoli executive willing to have further discussions and it's likely there's many more around Europe like them behind the scenes). All the major clubs in England and further afield have issued statements in favour of the status quo. Once a lot of money starts being offered, some may falter, but at the moment there's a mountain of opposition across European football.

Of course the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United having an annus horribilis and still playing at the top tier competition is exactly what they want to acheive with this. A more extreme example is that Union Berlin qualified for this season's Champions League, but now find themselves in a relegation battle - so if they were in the ESL this year, they could be in the 2. Bundesliga and the 'Star Legaue' next. Not sure that would be any fun for anyone.

The only example I can think that has tried a similar broadcasting set-up was LIV Golf. I'm sure that was a success for them...
Of course a big plus for LIV in their set-up is that viewers can only view an in-house production, so no discerning voices or criticism of the format or personalities involved. I can easily imagine this would be something that would be attractive to the Super League blazers.

That is a point that can be relevant for the wider application of world feed commentaries of course

La Liga do like a slogan or campaign. The primary example was their use of a Ukrainian flag on the scoreboard for well over 12 months after the invasion began (apart from the one week when they used a Turkish flag after their earthquake).

Snooker on C5 this afternoon with the Snooker 900, whatever that might be. Is this the first time they've shown snooker?

Seems to be a short form of the game with 15 minute (900 seconds) one frame games. Presumably to attract a younger audience, so of course they've filled it with players from the 80s.

It's a regular feature of exhibition snooker, usually sat on the likes of Sporty Stuff TV amongst the greyhound racing.
It probably wouldn't have got to Channel 5 without the legends attached.

It does seem that Channel 5 are taking the seniors events TNT aren't, I guess they're practically free to air at this point.

Snooker 900 is basically the Seniors' version of the WST Snooker Shoot-Out, but with a longer frame time, longer shot clock and a less rowdy crowd, and more of an exhibition. In earlier incarnations of the event, which were on SportyStuff TV, it also included amateur players and was played without any audience.

I honestly preferred this version of the Snooker 900, but it would only generate an audience on TV and in-person because it was the legends of the game. I felt it took ideas from the Shoot-Out and the old Pot Black, to make a relatively interesting afternoon of snooker.

You're correct re Channel 5: this is the first time they've ever shown snooker. Unfortunately, this event was limited to just the UK because the channel isn't available anywhere else, so it suits the kind of audience that would only watch BBC/ITV events [ie Free-to-Air events]. I do hope C5 continues this partnership to show these kind of snooker exhibitions though.
