It’s possible, but that package was basically made for free to air exposure if ITV go for it it’s likely to end on up ITV 4, Channel 4 probably can’t afford it and they’re going to lose some benefit if Channel 5 get them.. So you’d imagine the ECB would be keen to keep things as they are. But who knows.

Ultimately TV rights are designed to move around so there is always a chance things will move around.

For the first time, every match from next week's Players Championship snooker will be shown by ITV. Table 2 will be shown on ITV X with multi-camera set up and commentary. ITV have previously only shown action away from the main table as either updates or on one occasion they had a secondary stream on YouTube.

Not sure how it has taken so long for ITV to catch up on what Europsort and the BBC have been doing for a good while on their tournaments, but it is very good hear nonetheless. ITV's coverage otherwise is excellent.

They all will host their seconds legs, and it is very rare for British teams to host in the 17:55 slot. So, something will probably have to give, as I don't think TNT Sports would want to broadcast (and really produce) five top matches simultaneously then.
Do the local rights holder still have to produce the match coverage then - most sports seem to have moved on from that model.

Quite a shame that the current agreement with the BBC and ITV will not continue IMO. I suspect it has been a real showcase of the competition to have it dominating the country's two biggest channels on many a weekend, especially when the competition importance has been waning in the eyes of some.

Yes a real shame. Kind of hope ITV get any FTA component to free up BBC funds to ensure they keep part of the Six Nations, though vice versa might see ITV get exclusivity.

Seems to be changes to the rugby league graphics on Sky - a new font for names and a new colour scheme.

Looks like a few technical issues as well, with the scoreboard not appearing at the start of the match. When it has appeared it's been without a clock (only saying 1st).
EDIT: The scoreboard appeared around 15 minutes in as I was typing this.

Dave Woods on commentary on the opening game, so presumably is Sky's new #1 as suspected.

I had assumed so beacuse I haven't heard different, but as you say many sports and events are in-house or outsourced to one company now, so it would be a surprise if the biggest club football competition was bucking that trend. Thinking about further, it would be a bit of an issue in some countries, like in Germany where all Bundesliga matches are produced by DFL Media rather than the broadcasters, so the UCL broadcasters wouldn't have much experience in producing live football.

I suspect the long delay on this has either been due to budgets (not enough camerapeople to provide that level of coverage, the Table 2 coverage has historically been robotic cameras at lower quality) or contractual agreements that locked ITV out of being able to provide any coverage of that table (beyond highlights or 30 second snapshots). The one occasion you refer to with a stream on YouTube comes across as them actually testing to see if anyone actually wanted the Table 2 coverage to be a thing, and its taken them this long to get that in place for the Players' Championship (because it also requires them to provide the same scoreboard graphics to that table, additional camerapeople and so on).

It is great that this has happened, but remember that Eurosport had a head start back in 2016, when they signed the 10-year exclusivity deal to most other tournaments, and they had the backing of being a major sports broadcaster. ITV didn't have that much of a headstart, and they were starting from a lower level of exposure (having only had a few years of being back on the tour with just the Champ of Champs, and at that time, just moving into the Players' Series stuff). So the fact its taken this long is just a product of "time" if anything.

Commentary for Table 2 will be from Michael McMullan and Joe Perry, btw, confirmed by Hendon on his podcast.

A further statement from the FA about the awarding of the FA Cup TV rights. I know social media is not the brightest cross-section of society, but it does come across as a bit of PR mistake for the FA to announce the pay broadcaster and not the FTA broadcaster(s), as people are incorrectly thinking that TNT Sports will be the only broadcaster from next year. Saying that, it is also very unclear how significant the FTA agreement will be; it has to be one match (the final), but the FA has failed to say whether that will be all or will it be closer to the old or current FTA slate of matches.

I was thinking, in addition to all of the great points above, that the less capability of ITV Hub and ITV X to show extra streams would have been why, unlike BBC iPlayer adn Eurosport Player/Discovery+ that have long been able to show more streams than just relaying their linear channels.

Either way, it's great that extra sport is becoming a regular occurence on ITV X now.

RE: The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own - Brekkie - 15-02-2024

Presumably ITV previously had the option to switch tables if a match finished early.

Agree a misstep by the FA to announce the TNT deal first. I do think from their first release they'll be live FTA matches every round - unclear if the FTA games now may be simulcast of TNT games as the release reads like they'll have every non-3pm kick off. You'd imagine that would significantly decrease the price FTA's are willing to pay, and looks like they'll be losing replays too. I would imagine both BBC and ITV would want at least two matches a round and probably some first picks too.

RE: The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own - RhysJR - 15-02-2024

So, apparently the reason for only TNT Sports being announced today, is that they are the sole rights holder for the FA Cup, and any FTA partner will have to sublet their rights from WBD. Why the FA have done it that way is a very good question.

The FTAs should just refuse to cooperate but the BBC have history of propping up such a deal.
