Some of the new look of the Sky RL coverage below. This looks quite nice, using bright/'modern' colours whilst not being ugly, something the other code of rugby should take note.

An evolution not revolution to Sky's coverage, but a very noticeable one with a new commentator, new graphics and some of the main regular pundits not appearing. Only one co-commenator tonight as well, which is very rare in top rugby broadcasts these days.

Apparently the hour build-up didn't have an ad break for 50 minutes - quite the effort, especially with the frquency of breaks Sky love having.

It’s quite nice, I must say, and demonstrates the versatility of Sky’s graphics - because on the one hand, they’re the exact same graphics Sky have been using for years only with a new background and font for names, but on the other hand a lick of paint goes a long way. Exact same thing they pulled with the darts at Christmas, so maybe there’s other refreshes to come.

Why is it that rugby matches (league and union) on TV always have two co commentators?

RE: The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own - Rdd - 16-02-2024

They don’t always. Not union anyway. Some do, TNT’s #1 team for their PRL coverage does normally have two but it’s by no means standard. Many just have one, that would be typical certainly on URC games on RTE, TG4, and Premier Sports, and for all but the biggest Champions Cup games even on TNT.

In Australia they used to seem to have three or four co commentators for big games on Fox Sports, though I don’t think it’s quite so many since Nine/Stan took over. Not sure if that’s where it came into league; which is the dominant code Down Under (unless you live in Victoria).

A few more Super League tidbits.

There are new titles to go with the refreshed graphics.

The try replay music, “Carpe Diem” by Edrenalin seems to have finally bit the dust - it must have been the single longest lasting piece of Sky Sports presentation having been a part of their coverage since the very early days. It’s a very 90s piece of rave music, so I’m not surprised it’s gone, more how long it lasted!

Lastly Sky put on a full replay of the Hull derby this morning - while it’s not unusual for Sky to repeat things if their rights allow, what is unusual in this instance is that it appears to be a full replay of the live coverage including the studio segments with Brian Carney.

The Fox Sports channels in Latin America have switched to the ESPN umbrella, as part of Disney's attempt to phase out the Fox brand. This excludes Mexico and Argentina, both of which were previously sold and are currently licensing the Fox Sports name.

This is the moment when Fox Sports 2, a pan-regional feed across the continent, relaunched as ESPN 7 (Fox Sports 3, meanwhile, became ESPN 6):

Following this is a reshuffling of existing ESPN channels, as ESPN Extra, a channel dedicated to exclusive live events, becomes ESPN 4. The original ESPN 4, which was also the starting point for Fox Sports' Latin American expansion in the mid-90s, is now ESPN 5.

I think the original idea in union at least is to have one forward and one back, to have the two differing perspectives on the game. It is also often the case that it is used to have one commentator from each team, so they can beat any accusations of "bias". Sadly, the latter option sometimes takes priority, like on ITV next weekend we'll have two backs in Gordon D'Arcy and Shane Williams as the co-commentators for Ireland v. Wales having to talk about the technical details of scrums, when they would never be seen inside of one.

I saw someone say the use of music in try replays predates Sky to 1990! A significant, though minor, change.

Last season, I think they had 30 minutes highlights shown across the week/on demand, so it's good to see they are showing the whole thing as a repeat now.

The BBC online highlights are using the Sky commentary from the ex-BBC Dave Woods.

I doubt the full replay will last, least not in that slot - Super Rugby is back next weekend and NRL two weeks later.

For the World Club Challenge on BBC2 and iPlayer, Mark Chapman will host and Matt Newsum will be the main commentator.

Dave Woods' complete departure from the BBC lasted all of 24 hours as he is back commentating on Radio 5 Sports Extra for Leeds v. Salford.
