Netflix confirms a second series of their Six Nations series, as well as one on La Liga, one on tennis star Carlos Alcaraz, one on Jose Mourinho, one on the Boston Red Sox, and one on and one on the world's top sprinters.

Not sure if it’s any indication that announcement of a broadcast deal is imminent but Ireland yesterday announced its Autumn Nations Series matches with fairly unorthodox kick off times of Friday 8:10pm and Saturday 3:10pm. (Ireland are virtually unknown to play a home international on a Friday night).

The UEFA Champions League quarter-final draw took place today, with the match schedule confirmed this afternoon. Probably almost as good as a draw as you could have wished for, with Arsenal v. Bayern Munich and Manchester City v. Real Madrid, with the winners of those matches meeting in the semi-final. So a potential all-English semi-final, but not an all-English final (thankfully). Unfortunately for TNT Sports, the Tuesday/Wednesday match split has been decided so one half of the draw plays together on the same day. So, Arsenal and Man City play concurrently.

The Europa League and Europa Conference League draws were all done today. Liverpool and West Ham could be opponents in the final in Dublin. All eight UEL quarter-final ties will kick-off at 20:00 BST, with two of the UECL ties on each night kicking off in the early 17:45 slot (Aston Villa, away in the second leg, kick-off in the early slot then).

The men's Scottish Cup semi-final schedule has been announced. Celtic are the lucky Old Firm team to feature on BBC Scotland first.

The rugby league Challenge Cup Round of 16 draw has taken place. The 'TV' picks have been confirmed. The belief that the BBC linear picks will start a round earlier than last year has transpired. This means a massive clash like Leeds v. St Helens will only be shown on the Red Button and iPlayer. This change is probably best for the BBC budget, but not seeing any benefits for viewers or the sport as a whole.

A behind-the-scenes look at the extensive OB technology used, in streaming (!) a football tournament between French and Spanish game streamers:

Surprising how 'online content' has elevated to having the same complexity as traditional broadcasting, maybe even more...

Swapping the two UCL matches involving the German clubs would have enabled the English, German and Spanish teams to play on different nights.

Assume The Sportsman is a website. Does feel like the Challenge Cup has gone backwards a bit in terms of coverage - arguably more value in a FTA knockout match where the effect of the result is immediate than the random league matches.

That would have left two matches in Madrid on the same night, which isn't possible. They could have flipped one of the fixtures (i.e. Dortmund or Man City host the first leg) but that would cause controversy to alter the result of the random draw purely for non-sporting reasons.

Yep. A sports news website primarially. They have streamed quite a few rugby league matches on YouTube, especially from the Challenge Cup. Featherstone v. Wakefield in the Challenge Cup last weekend the most recent example. I think there is talk of a new format next year (possibly even group stages), so that could change the amount of coverage hopefully.

Ah, that's me not knowing the Athletico Madrid crest. Thought it was an Italian one for some reason. Yes, no way around that. The last season of the Champions League proper then - can't really see the new format lasting more than one cycle.

That was on me for not finding a graphic with words Big Grin

On about next cycle, this situation would be complicated with Amazon having first pick on Tuesdays in the UK. That means, this fixture schedule would mean only one of the two English sides being able to be shown on Amazon UK. Not sure if Amazon would just have to grin and bare it, or would they potentially be allowed to show the other on the Wednesday of the other leg.

Also for next season, the knockout stages will be less randomized. The Round of 16 onwards will be set as a 'tennis-style seeded draw', where the #1 ranked team from the league stage cannot play the #2 ranked team until the final. I don't think that is a terrible move, there's far worse innovations for 24-25.

Hopefully the Super League threats blow over, everyone sees this format as a poorer version of the competition, and we return to something closer to the last twenty years afterwards. Though, more matches mean more money, so the forces of change will need to work hard. Presumably the two group stages format of two decade plus ago had more matches, how did that end up being cancelled?

That's partly why calls to axe FA Cup replays makes no sense - back when they had the two group stages that was 12 matchdays before the last 16 and that's what this new format will have as well.

When an election comes, the Lib Dems will call for an expansion of sport forced to be on FTA TV, including ten Premier League games and ten Scottish Premiership games a year.

I don't think the list is too outlandish. PL games seem unlikely, though I think everything else bar the Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup has been shown live on FTA TV in recent memory.
