Bit of a chaotic couple of minutes in the Chelsea/Leicester City FA Cup game - the BBC almost missed an (own) goal as they were in a replay. The replay ended just as the ball was going into the net. To be fair, it really came out of nowhere...

Saturday's FA Cup and Six Nations ratings...after that cracker at Old Trafford this afternoon, I'll hazard a guess that it outrates the rest of the weekend's live action.

and that is why the FA Cup needs to be free to view. To think after next season TNT will have the likes of Manchester United V Liverpool. Yes we might have had Wolverhampton V Coventry and Chelsea V Leicester but they were no where near as dramatic as this

Equally could have been the other way round, with the other ties being the best matches and that being a stinker.

That it was the ‘big’ teams that produced a great game is far from assured. Wolves v Coventry was just as entertaining as Man Utd v Liverpool.

And, once again, let’s see how the FTA agreement turns out. Your definitive statements have yet to be proven, and there’s almost 20 years of precedence (before the current deal) to say otherwise.

Like I have said as well TNT would not have brought the FA rights if it wasn't to their own gain. If it was ITV having the rights and not the BBC it might have been different. Wolves V Coventry is never going to be as watchable as Manchester United V Liverpool. Plus where have TNT subletted rights before which has been good (Champions league final, Europa League Final, Europa League Conference-No) FIFA Club world Cup-No

All they have subletted is the scraps of the Olympics Angry

Whilst I 100% agree with this, it is evident that the FA have lost the narrative about this. I'm seeing many prominent names, like below, basically proclaim that matches like this will be locked away forevermore from next year. In reality, the new deal will likely be similar to anything from before 2021. A major PR blunder by everyone involved that, when agreed, the new FTA element will not fully put to bed.

The FA Cup draw was done from the ITV studio in Old Trafford rather than with Seema Jaswal in a bunker. This meant Roy Keane and Graeame Sounness (nice to see him back on TV) appear on international broadcasters doing nothing. Ian Wright must have been drunk on that game, it was close to a Rod Steward Scottish Cup draw impression!

They haven’t ‘subletted the scraps of the Olympics’, the BBC has first and second pick of what it can show at any given time, so the content that would have been on broadcast channels is still free for the viewer. I’m not a fan of the deal and don’t think it’s within the spirit of the Crown Jewels rules but it’s not like the BBC are confined to showing the shooting whilst the 100m is on.

As for the FA Cup deal, the FA might have wanted the first picks to all be free to air and that might have been the only way the deal went through, which is almost as good as any deal free to air broadcasters have had in many years apart from for the anomaly of the last few years. That would still be potentially be good deal for Discovery, because they get a shed load of exclusive football and can claim they have every match live on those weekends and make some money back by selling to the BBC or ITV. We just don’t know yet either way.

Right so if lets say in the Paris Olympics at the same time we have a tennis gold medal hope, An Athletics gold medal hope and A Hockey Gold Medal hope they would be able to show all three live? No they wouldn't because they can only show it on two channels if I remember correctly which they didn't do in Tokyo. Why shouldn't the shooting be shown live and free on national TV when the 100m is on the same time live and free on National TV?

If TNT were such a lovely company they would have subletted every single moment of the Olympics for the BBC to show like before 2020.

Also if the BBC deal is that good why not announce now

I don’t disagree with you, just disagreed with your characterisation of the deal.

Thought it made more sense to the semi-final draw at the ground rather than setting up a second OB for the sake of a minute-long process.

Certainly it could be done for later rounds if they were looking to save money.

Reminded of when S4C used to do Welsh Cup draws from the clubhouse of wherever they had just done a live game.

Certainly better than having to download an official FAW app and watch a not always reliable pre-rec’d stream padded out for dear life with features about teams that had been knocked out the previous round anyway.
