If Channel four wasn’t showing Englans v Brazil they might have been interested but less so. Would be the first playoff final featuring a home nations on English Language FTA. Scotland’s in 2020 was on Pick and Wales World Cup one was on ITV1.

I would hope so given Scotland and NI friendlies have just been sublet, but suspect they consider S4C to be the FTA gift, although if they could at least let them provide an English commentary track for the play off final that would be a compromise - especially as Viaplay themselves seemed to put minimum effort in, though did at least use their own commentry this time but no surrounding presentation.

I don't think that would be their rights to sublet, as I think S4C are the primary rights holder of Wales matches this cycle (they are the host broadcaster for Wales games). S4C's biggest audiences of the year is usually key Wales football qualifiers, so you can understand that they would be hesitant in allowing other broadcasters in on that.

On the other hand, Viaplay/Premier have negotiated to allow S4C to have red button English commentary of all their URC broadcasts, so maybe they could agree a deal for the same to happen for English language rights ahead of Tuesday.

From September, S4C will be subletting Wales rights from Viaplay/Premier; they are currently buying the rights directly from UEFA.

It's before my time, but I understand the last time Malaysia hosted in 1998 is viewed as a success. Only once since has it been hosted outisde of the UK and Australia.

Malaysia has turned down the chance to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, citing the cost being too high. Think that could be terminal.

This is where not having a multi-billion pound contract with a US broadcaster catches up with them. Sadly the end is nigh - the big sports can do without it but perhaps the minor sports with good participation across the commonwealth will do their own thing, and perhaps could come together in a European Sport Championships style format where they organise events in one city under one banner, but in a manner that seems to avoid the costs of a large scale games.

Indeed one silver lining from a British point of view might be a move towards focusing more on European competition and hopefully eventually the European Sport Championships and European Games can come together to create an event that feels like a true Eurolympics. Indeed IIRC the BBC had the rights to the European Games last year but didn't even really show it - that's how insignificant they are.

I wonder if they might well decide to do one more in 2030 as a farewell games. The extra four years might mean an UK / Canada / Australia hosted bid occurs - if it was across an entire country it might be viable as it would be like lots of mini champs

RE: The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own - Newshound47 - 22-03-2024

The main sports that miss out are Netball and Lawn Bowls - Squash is joining the Olympics in 2028.

I wonder if the Netball World Cup might go biannuall instead of every four years for the extra exposure.

RE: The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own - Newshound47 - 22-03-2024

The European games idea has failed so I don’t think that is being revived as major games.

And even 2032 and later the Olympics is risk. How much will they get for the USA in streaming world. Particularly if 2036 is held in India or Middle East which are bad time zones for the USA.

I don't think the list is too outlandish. PL games seem unlikely, though I think everything else bar the Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup has been shown live on FTA TV in recent memory.
