Sky's coverage of rugby league has waned a little over the last few years. There was Boots n' all, and Super League backchat. The latter went first, then Boots n' all. And Sky got championship rights, and didn't show much from that as well. I just wonder if C4 might consider a bid for the full rights, rather than its restricted live rights currently?

Doubt it there is the fact C4 aren't commissioning shows at the minute because of advertising freezes and would C4 show 2-3 matches per week and show it in primetime? I think Channel 4 will try and keep what they have got or maybe even try and get a few extra matches if possible but they will never get full rights

Yes - adding a few more games might make sense but not the lot. Pushing for the Grand Final to be in any free to air bundle would make sense.

Possibly just a matter of the RFL talking up the rights price, as was suggested at the time it was suggested DAZN was bidding? It seems like it would be a huge step for the RFL to part ways with Sky after 30-odd years of them as their primary broadcast partner, and that it would just take the right bid from Sky to renew the rights. Then again the complacency may be real, and Sky seem in a real period of retrenchment. They’re virtually out of rugby union now Sanzaar aside, and the football division seems to be suffering a huge talent exodus.

Still, Super League’s broadcast slots really don’t suit TNT. After all, “Thursday Nights…are Europa Nights” and Friday nights would see a League v Union clash if they were showing PRL and SL games right opposite each other, although I don’t think the audience for each really overlaps that much, and the different seasons probably help minimise those clashes anyway.

Would TNT sports, if they do make an offer, have to show on Thursday and Friday night? Could they offer Saturday evening, and perhaps Sunday lunchtime? The latter was, until 1995, the traditional time and day for Rugby League, not live on TV, to be played in England.

How is the Europa League football an issue? They have three channels, right? So easily enough space for both to be shown.

RE: The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own - Brekkie - 13-07-2023

Well usually with the Europa and Conference league there can be 3 or 4 English teams in action and a couple of Scottish teams too - across two kick off slots admittedly but enough to potentially fill three channels. Then there is any Goals show they might have or non-UK tie, plus any other sport they might be airing across the week to consider.

Easily fixed though, especially with Rugby League running through Spring and Summer. I'd imagine in Europa weeks you just air them Fri/Sat night instead of Thu/Fri - if they even keep tge Sky schedule in the first place. Not sure how popular the matches are on those nights with fans - in Union for example fans seem to like the Friday night kick offs for club games but not Six Nations games.

The number of matches they show varies depending on the amount of UK interest, but given they've got 32 to choose from, it's unlikely they'll want to dedicate any energy to anything other than football on a Thursday night.

File this one away for when there are complaints about why the BBC isn’t showing Euro 2024 in UHD HDR…

…because (amazingly) there isn’t going to be any UHD coverage.

Very disappointing!

They did away with a traditional Thursday window that the European Challenge Cup (the rugby union one) had on a Thursday night when the competition went exclusive to BT (after the 2014-18 shared deal with Sky) for exactly that reason. It wouldn’t be unusual for Europa League (and Conference League these days) games to be on all four linear channels plus a couple of red button ones as well.

It’s a pity, it was the only exclusive slot the Challenge Cup had, and the competition went through a few years of little or no TV coverage in the group stages, until the recent deal with Viaplay/Premier.
