Will be interesting then if the BBC continue with that arrangement for the Olympics - arguably Gabby would be more useful hosting a bigger chunk of the daily coverage.  Given the longer shifts of recent games Hazel in the morning, Gabby in the afternoon and Clare in the evening would work well enough with other talent anchoring from venues.

I'd have thought they would have Clare and Gabby co-host the evening slot as they did in Birmingham last year and/or for Gold Coast 2018 and Munich 2022. Birmingham had Clare in the studio for the whole event (leading the swimming coverage) with Gabby hosting the athletics from the stadium and only being present in the second half of the event. Gold Coast and Munich basically have Clare host until the swimming coverage ended and then she left Salford, with Gabby not appearing until the start of the athletics in the second half of the event, then there was a period where the co-hosted or had two presenting slots whilst the two blue ribbon sports overlapped.

Weird that Clare hasn't presented any live Olympic sporting action since 2018.

For some reason for every multisport event since Glasgow 2014, Gabby has only covered the athletics, and in the case of Rio 2016 only flew out for the second week. Guess that might be a personal preference.

I'd imagine it wouldn't be too disimilar hosting arrangement to Birmingham last year. I'm not sure there is a need for a pair hosting the mornings again even if Holly Hamilton and Jason Mohammad worked well; they could split into two slots going changing at 1500. Isa Guha and JJ Chalmers were good value doing the highlights show. A few others who have appeared on recent multisport events like Sam Quek, Ayo Akinwolere and Alex Scott might also could be featured.

Thinking of my own fantasy rota in my head, how was Breakfast presented for Athens 2004? It was the last Summer Games in a similar timezone to the UK but hosted outside the UK, so rather similar to next year. 2008 and 2020(+1) had sport all the way through, 2016 was very similar to normal Breakfast but hosted from the sport news studio, and 2012 was at the Olympic Park with added Hazel Irvine.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are without a host as Victoria, Australia has pulled out due to costs

Ouch, that could be fatal for the 2026 Games, and in the worst case scenario the Games going forward. The Victoria bid itself was quite last minute, with Birmingham only have five years notice to host 2022 following the removal of Durban as hosts. Since 2002 the Games have got into a slightly concerning holding pattern of alternating between British and Australian hosts (bar 2010) and I wouldn't imagine many other Commonwealth nations would be willing or able to host either.

There's talk of a few other suggested hosts, most notably Birmingham who reportedly would have been keen to host back-to-back editions if Victoria hadn't have come forward. Obviously time, or the lack of, will be a major factor in what potential hosts would feel adequate in getting venues and infrastructure in order in time. Qatar used to be a former British protectorate and I've heard they're keen on hosting sporting events - maybe they can be rushed into the movement and host (joking).

With Canada seemingly unofficially locked in for the 2030 games and thus unlikely to take the baton, I have a feeling that the UK might end up having to host again in 2026

According to the BBC article, the Victoria state government only gave the CGF 8 hours notice before making the announcement, so it's looking very uncertain as to what will happen next

I can only see a a country wide bid occurring at this late stage with events all over England/UK or Canada.

Somewhere in the Middle East will probably host the Olympics in 2036 and I’m not joking.

Liverpool might be keen to host considering they lost out to Birmingham for 2022. London 2026 would arguably be good for the prestige element across other Commonwealth nations.

Wouldn’t there be binding contacts in place for 2026? Couldn’t the games take legal action against Victoria? Not that it would be good in terms of Commonwealth relations.

The diving has already begun, with a British medal only being available on All Aquatics.

The BBC and World Aquatics have not reached an agreement to allow the briadcaster to air the World Swimming Championships next week. I echo Andy Jamieson's thoughts below. It will still be available for free on All Aquatics.

I think given how last minute if the UK hosts it would be Birmingham or Glasgow again to avoid any significant building.   It would be too costly for Liverpool to step in so quick.

London a possibility but London automatically makes it more expensive.

Looks like they didn't have Olympic Breakfast in 2004.  Instead Olympic Grandstand began at 7am with Breakfast shifting to BBC2, but events generally beginning at 8am.

I suspect the one channel deal might see Olympic Breakfast from 6-8am then live coverage, with perhaps the news block starting at 8am on BBC2.

Birmingham is possible, though the Alexander Stadium is hosting the European Athletics Championships in mid August (from 10-16th) 2026, so that could be a hurdle that would need to be overcome (no pun intended)

Plus there the potential issue that both the stadium and the aquatics centre in Sandwell began undergoing post-games legacy/downsizing building work pretty soon after the games finished, which would have to be reversed if the games were to return to Birmingham in 2026
