It's unlikely to happen but with STV Player trying to grow it's footprint the Scottish element of the URC rights would be a good buy, not just for their Scottish viewers but to bring in rugby fans UK wide too.

If the outcome of this though was the UEFA Home Nations games back on the BBC that wouldn't be a bad thing.

My team leader at work is an ice hockey fan. What happens there, as viaplay sponsor an ice hockey tournament.

No immediate change to the U.K. operation but looks like they are looking for a buyer or partner. Edit: explicitly said in this presentation that they are leaving UK, so looks like a big “For Sale” sigh has just been hung up.

Away from sport, I'm still absolutely amazed by the 'Nordic Noir' strategy they pursued here. Honestly I think the non-sport subscription they offered might have had users in the low thousands, if that. It's surely a tiny market that's already well served by Walter Presents for free. Presumably their big (relatively speaking) announcement of doing a reboot of Rebus in the UK will now be shelved, though I suppose they might keep it for their other international services.

Saw a comment earlier they had already ditched the EIHL.

They are dropping the Films & Series tier in all non-Nordic markets I understand.

Would there be a monopoly issue if TNT acquired this - a lot of the rights they have would line up nicely, with a ready made FAST channel to use as a barker to draw new subscribers a la the old BT Showcase.

I don't think they'd be any real concern, especially as they're relatively minor rights.

In other news Gold Coast has offered to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

I'm not sure the CMA can stop TNT Sports acquiring some rights, if they came back up for tender. As regards buying out Viaplay, then TNT could argue, that it's a failing company, and sometimes, that argument is accepted by the CMA (competition and Markets Authority), where it would be likely that a purchaser of a failing company would've obtained the assets anyway, as the company would've went bust, and assets put up for sale.

Another sport that will need a new rights holder for an event is Snooker, the Championship league. For one season, it was on ITV4 and occasionally ITV3, so would be a good fit on there. La Liga will have to seek a new TV rights holder, and again, ITV has shown the odd live La Liga match, so probably a good fit there as well.

But in both codes of Rugby, there's uncertainty, especially second tier rugby league. Their last deal with Sky saw limited coverage, more on the part of Sky who took the rights, and limited the coverage as a spolier. Would they go back to Sky, or could they go to Channel 4? And in Union, the URC is the biggest affected. The obvious one would be to revert to the 2009 situation, with the BBC nations sharing the UK rights, which would mean less games a weekend live, but more security over fees, and transmission. The TNT sub licensing of the early games in the challenge cup, to Viaplay, what happens to them? DO they go back to TNT, or perhaps be screened by ITV? And will anyone take on Top 14?

The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final between Dublin and Kerry will be across network BBC Two on 30 July, not just in Northern Ireland.
