Very much so.

Sounds from the article that we can expect a whole new look on-air wise for Sky Sports News tomorrow - it’s barely changed in years so good to see some change.

I don't think there is any interest though in a Commonwealth Athletics Championships or Commonwealth Swimming Championships- their main selling point is as a mini-Olympics. If it isn't that, even on a smaller scale similar to the European Sport Championships, it's not worth it.

Coincidentally the Commonwealth Youth Games begin today in Trinidad and Tobago, live on YouTube which is oddly eems to be their first live streaming event since Glasgow 2014.

Where it mentions about the graphics sharing templates with Sky News -  I did see the other night when the the L-graphic was on downtime and had the usual "We apologise for the loss of the headline service" graphic up, it had a working ticker which was very much in the Sky News style with the logo and clock in the bottom left. I've no idea if this is something they've been doing for ages during the overnight recorded content but it did make me wonder if it was something they were moving towards.

I’m not suggesting just athletics and swimming, but I think it’s fair to say there’s a world in which the games could exist without quite a lot of minority sports like lawn bowls and 3x3 basketball. If it brings the cost down of buying the rights and broadcasting the games then that could help increase its mainstream profile beyond just the UK and Australia.

Maybe ending the games is the answer, which would be ironic given Birmingham was the biggest games ever. Personally I find the games become less relevant each time they come around, probably because the Commonwealth itself feels less relevant as time goes on and feels like an increasingly odd collection of countries.

Looks like that could be the case, you can see the League Two information goes right to the top of the L bar, and the transfer clock now within the ticker space (left hand image), then from what I can make out on the blurry image (right), it looks like a Sky News style layout with similar lower thirds, logo bottom left as you said and with the same transfer clock.

That was something that caught my attention as well. Katharine was also the 5 Live reporter/commentator during the London Diamond League a few weeks back, so this looks like it could be a more than a one-off appointment. Interestingly, Katharine has been the regular in-stadium commentator, along with Geoff Wightman, for major events in recent years - certainly they covered the 2021 Olympics, the 2022 World Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Ronald McIntosh (a former occasional BBC TV athletics voice) has been the most often heard commentator for 5 Live's boxing coverage in the past year or so, so it appears that the joint role of athletics and boxing commentator has finally come to an end after many years.

I would assume Gabby could join on the Tuesday evening, travel and jetlag allowing. As a reference, Simon Brotherton tweeted that he arrived in Glasgow 36 hours after leaving the Women's World Cup and was on air from Australia on Tuesday morning (our time) and in Glasgow on Thursday evening. The other theory could be that Alex Scott hosting the final as she did host the BBC's only England game thus far.

To the coverage at large, I'm pleasantly surprised that a lot of the evening session coverage is on BBC One - I guess it's more cost effective than any new content/repeats but rare that sport is aired on primetime BBC One. Nice to see the Red Button channel get namechecked for a few sessions for a change (think it's mainly the race walks).

The additional half hour of evening coverage on BBC Three sounds interesting. At the London Diamond League a few weeks back, the studio team was not heard from during the main block of action (1400-1600, the usual Diamond League broadcast), with all the studio analysis and interviews being aired in a 30 minute block from 16:00 with Jeanette Kwayke doubling up as presenter and interviewer. I would hope that the BBC Three block would be something that takes inspiration from this format as the BBC studio coverage can be a little bit too much*, though was better last year than it has been methinks. Worth noting that The World Championships have a bit more breathing space than the Diamond League's schedule so there is a better balance most likely available.

There is no secondary reporter named if Jeanette is presenting for a few days, so it might be possible that like in London, Jeanette presents from trackside. Sarah Mulkerrins did the job at the World and European Championships last year.

*PS It was quite annoying yesterday seeing Clare Balding talk about how great the Cycling World Championships yesterday a few times with the action being audible and slightly visible behind her (PPS It's good there is on the iPlayer an uninterrupted feed of the track action, without the inserts from Clare et al. which is great if you would want to see it all).

I missed this when it was announced, but the World Atheltics Championships will also be aired on Eurosport for the first time in a few editions. This is a pan-European deal agreed with the EBU and ESPN.

I can't help but comapre and contrast the athletics with swimming world championships, and how the latter got no TV coverage from either of the UK Olympic broadcasters, despite swimming being the equivalent to athletics in the first week of an Olympic schedule, and swimming being more likely to be a more successful sport for Great Britain in Paris. Obviously we don't know how much at fult the broadcasters or World Aquatics are for the almost coverage blackout the swimming had last week.

The same graphics and titles from Sky Sports' EFL coverage tonight. I'm getting less and less of a fan of the graphics the longer they stay sadly.

There is a slight tweak with the background of images in the promo/coming up graphics tacking inspiration from the 'Greatest Show' advert.

The new clampdown on time wasting and disrespect/treatment of officials seem to be being officiated correctly though - six added minutes and five yellow cards in the first half alone!

Some non-real world sports broadcasting news, Guy Mowbray and Sue Smith will join the commentray line-up of EA Sports FC 24 (what was the FIFA video games). They will join the previous pairing of Derek Rae and Stewart Robson.

Where is the BBC Netball being hosted from? Looks like a bunker that makes the GB News set look like the Strictly studio.

Think it's virtual which makes it even less excusible - it has a big black cloth rucked up in the background, though guessing it's a green cloth. Is it in the atrium at Salford?

RE: The Sport Thread - For stuff not worthy of a thread of its own - Critique - 05-08-2023

It looks very much like the atrium but I doubt it’s virtual - that’d be very difficult to light (although the lighting isn’t great anyway) and the reflections in the base of the stools/desk are all too normal for a green screen - you can see bits of the background reflected in the bases which I doubt they’d have managed with an ad hoc green screen set-up.
