Iconic Radio Station Logos
#1

First post to do with radio presentation.

I've been ruminating on how some stations have had classic and iconic logos.

The big question is, which station logos are iconic and which aren't so but still memorable to a lesser degree?

I'll start, here is one that many a Mancunian will know from the nineties. I present Key 103's logo from around 1990-ish to at least the trun of the millennium. For me this just is just as stand out-y in being bold and having a statement to make.

Which others are out there?

First Post here.

In an era where everything is visual and you are more likely to see branding while listening to radio its amazing how uninspiring and un-iconic station logos are thesedays.

For me the Capital FM sun is truly iconic. That may be because I was listening to the radio the most around this time although in my area it was used on Power FM.

I also was quite fond of Power's sister station logo seen here alongside Spencer Kelly from BBC Click.

The Capital FM sun is still used by a station of the same name in Uganda and probably not legally.

When I lived with my Grandfather, this was the exact sticker that was on my bedroom window. The old Red Rose radio logo from the 80s. Now, that window is gone, as is the sticker, and the radio station is Greatest Hits Lancashire now. Shame really.

I have always thought in that presumably late 80's / early 90's era of radio logos it was quite weird to see main station logos - in this case Capital FM - being used on other stations.

And also with that car sticker. I love how in that small print it has FM has the more technical VHF.

I suspect what's iconic will really depend on where people are, but nostalgia aside I always looked out for the GWR orb when travelling about:

They came in blue, green and purple and I think those colours designated something to do with something?

Unusual if you were used to seeing it on another station yes. I remember this one fondly being the BRMB logo.

This was the most familiar station logo of my childhood

I saw this version on a car sticker the other day, the car was newish so clearly for nostalgia reasons

Is that Capital FM Network logo the first example of a logo being used across different local brands in a group?

Incidentally I think the logo BRMB had before it stands the test of time a lot better.

This is an old but interesting blog post about the various Capital FM logos used from the late 90s sun/smile to the then-current day:

It’s interesting that the “Swiss roll” logo has remained virtually the same since that post was written.

The logos that Global use for their stations are just like their radio stations where they look classically familiar in addition to their radio station sounds.

After years of turbulence in the noughties and the loss of major talent, the logo and the station are stable.
