And lots of local news. WHDH Boston after they lost their NBC affliation, they now air 12 hours of news a day on weekdays with Family Feud, Dr. Phil, Funny You Should Ask and Inside Edition padding the rest of the schedule. Weekends are still a generous 6 hours a day.

Didn't the owners of CHCH Hamilton, Channel Zero, go for some of the local TV licences when they were initially advertised?

From what I recall, they had become a very news-intensive station after going independent and were planning the same (or similar) for the licences here.

Not only did they fail to win a licence, but CHCH's subsidiary ended up going bankrupt, forcing the station to scale back its news operations.
